A swivel, perhaps used in falconry as a point of attachment between the leash and the jess. The object consists of a copper-alloy cast bead, either hollow or drilled, with a tiny loop of diameter 4.2mm at one end, and a grooved swivel at the other end. The groove in the latter retains a thread of organic material, probably twine. The body of the bead bears repeated round, probably floral, relief decoration retaining traces of gilding which extends to the loop. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Diameter: 8.4mm, Length: 17.8mm, Weight: 1.99gms.

Probably late medieval/ early post medieval copper alloy vervel or 'hawking ring'. It is rectangular in section with an internal diameter of 11.5mm (thickness c.0.5mm). There are traces of a white residue on the inside of the ring while the patina on the outside is dark brown. The vervel appears cast in two C-shaped pieces, joined together to become circular. One join has straight edges and is a little off-kilter; the other has very rough edges and suggests a break and/ or repair. The inside surface however is smooth and shows no sign of either join. Perhaps this indicates the joins ar…
