Copper alloy probable tobacco jar lid handle. Cast ovoid or bud-shaped knop on a very short stalk rising from a biconvex base whose upper surface bears subdivisions perhaps intended to resemble leaves. A prominent mould line runs from knop to base. A collar below the base retains white powdery material, and would probably have fitted into a lid made of another different material; this might represent decay of a leaden insert to add weight to the lid to ensure the contents of the jar would be kept sealed and fresh. The knop handle is now at an eccentric angle. Abraded. Suggested date: …

Copper alloy probable handle from a tobacco holder (box). See 'Finds Identified' by G. Bailey pages 62 & 63, figures 1 & 2. The smooth undecorated Post-medieval handle is 15.05mm tall. The top of the handle is formed of a flattened disc with a diameter of 13.07mm that then gently narrows to a shaft or pedestal of 5.88mm diameter before gently curving outwards again to form a base disc of 15.35mm diameter. The handle seems to have originally been souldered into place. Weight 7.97g. 17th to 18th century in date. Alternatively, but less likely the artefact could be a furn…
