A copper alloy stud fastener dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1300-1500. The object comprises a disc shaped thickened upper plate, an integrally cast circular rivet, and a smaller and more fragile lower discoid rear plate. It is very similar to LANCUM-73829A, the record for which states that: "This is an object type that was used up to the modern day and cannot be dated precisely without archaeological context; however, examples of medieval date are recorded in Egan and Pritchard (1991) Dress Accessories, pp. 168 - 172, esp. nos 797, 819 - 823." A copper alloy with white metal collar stud, cuff link or other dress fastener, probably dating from AD 1800 - 1900. The stud is a circular disc with a convex front face. The front is decorated with a spiral in relief, perhaps a stylised letter G or number 9 or 6. This is surrounded by a border of raised scrolling foliage decoration around the edge of the button. The front face of the stud appears to be a white metal or silver enriched copper alloy. The reverse of the disc is slightly hollow and has a central bar of circular section projecting backwards. The bar appears to be solid an…

A complete post-Medieval or Modern stud fastener in the form of a button, stud or cufflink (c. AD 1750- 1950). Both elements are joined together by a short integral shank which is rectangular in cross-section. The smaller base element is made of copper-alloy. It is domed and circular 'half-moon' in shape with a diameter of 15.34mm. It is flattened at the half-moon 'points' to meet the upper element though is not joined. The shank is attached to a flat base with a circumferential lip of 2.06mm depth. This base holds the larger domed element, 19.96mm in diameter, made of a composite,…

Copper alloy stud. Two components of a press stud fastening, retaining traces of the textile in which both elements were sited in the hollow edges of both. On what was presumably the inner side of the fastening, black paint or lacquer. On the other side there is a stamped four-pointed star motif and extensive gilding traces. The survival of textile fragments points to a recent date; two distinct fabrics appear to be represented though the fastener is presumably from a single garment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950. Diameter: 11.1mm, Thickness (overall): 7.6mm, W…

Copper-alloy double sheet stud fastener or rivet of uncertain date (c. 43 - 1750 AD). The object consists of two roughly-shaped rectangular copper-alloy sheets joined together by a thick, flat-headed rivet with a circular shank, leaving a wide gap between the two sheets. There is a small lump of dark-brown organic material still trapped between the two sheets, probably leather. Otherwise, the brown surface of the object is covered with light-green copper-alloy corrosion. The object is 22.06mm in length, 15.59mm in width and 7.83mm in thickness. It weighs 4.57g. The crude form of th…

Copper alloy stud fastener fragment. Cast waisted oval-ended plate of thickness 1.2mm with an integrally cast dome headed or button-ended lug of diameter 6.1mm at the end of a short [2.5mm] integrally cast cylindrical shank. This appears too delicate to attach a spur, though the button could pass into a slit in thin leather as a fastener. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. A complete copper alloy stud fastener of post-medieval date. The head of the stud is a hollow dome decorated on the upper surface with a central circular indentation within two circumferential grooves and a grooved border. From the centre of the reverse of the head an integral circular sectioned shank extends which terminates in a flat plate which would have secured the stud in place. The metal has a mid green patina and is worn. The object is 17.7mm in diameter, 9.7mm long with shank and weighs 2.9g.

Copper alloy loop fastener, as identified by finder. Cast biconvex stud with a sub-triangular back-plate; the latter bears black paint on the reverse. The stud presumably engaged a slot in a leather item; the finder suggests a scabbard. The black paint or lacquer may suggest this to be an Early Post-Medieval object. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 15.8mm, Width: 11.8mm, Diameter of stud: 11.3mm, Thickness: 6.1mm, Weight: 3.16gms.

A Roman copper alloy fastener. The fastener consists of a cast rectangular plate, which is semi-lentoidal in section. The upper surface of the plate is separated into two equal cells by a horizontal rib. Each cell has five leaf shaped mouldings, perhaps intended to represent snakes. The area surrounding the mouldings is filled with red enamel, now degraded. The underside of the plate is plain. A rectangular attachment loop with rectangular perforation extends at right angles from the underside. The fastener measures 29mm in length and 17mm in width. The thickness of the fastener includ…
