An incomplete copper alloy shoe or clog clasp of the Post-Medieval period (dating to the 18th or 19th century). The clasp is sub-rectangular in plan with a straight short top end and a rounded short bottom end. Both short ends would have had integral hooks projecting from them - in this example the top hook is present and complete, but only a small section of the bottom attachment remains. The face of the clasp is inscribed with the word PEACE above a design appearing to represent a U shape, from either side of which springs a floral spray or perhaps a wheat sheaf. This is obscur…

Copper alloy possible shoe fragment. A sheet metal fragment of doubled thickness with three pierced rectangular holes along its upper edge and sharply folded along the lower edge. This appears to be a skeuomorphic reinforcement for the side of a work boot with holes suggesting the passage of laces at the throat of the boot and curled below to fit between its upper and sole. An early form of safety boot. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900 Length: 79.3mm, Height: 40mm, Thickness (overall at fold): 8.9mm, Weight: 25.99gms

Part of a flat, curving copper alloy object, probably a reinforcement plate from the heel of a shoe. There are four attachment holes, one unfettled and blocked by metal and one truncated by a break. All four would have been set within a recess but this has been worn away as the object approaches the break. Very faint rust marks around the holes may indicated that iron nails were used. Weight 9.1g. Extant length 35mm. Width and thickness at unbroken end 18.8 and 2.8mm. Only one comparable object (SUR-8EBE74) has been noted. It was dated to 1650 - 1850.

Copper alloy shoe part. A cast crescentic lightly concavo-convex plate with seven of an original nine or ten long [9mm] square-section rivets passing through it. This was nailed at the heel of a boot to save wear on the heel. This reporter purchased cast white metal versions in the 1970s [they were then known as 'Blakeys' or 'segs' and had integral spikes]; greenish corrosion suggests this example is of a copper alloy. This material would have the advantage of not striking sparks against iron floorboard nails in a setting such as a flour mill, where the risk of explosion could arise. …

Incomplete sheet copper alloy miniature shoe, missing part of the sole, near the toe, and the heel, with two rectangular attachments for staples or studs to attach the shoe to the foot of a doll, probably made of wood. But the shoe is quite large for a doll's shoe and these are not normally made of metal, so it is more likely that this shoe would have held a pin cushion with the staples, within the aperture of the shoe. The recorder has seen similar brass examples of pin cushion holders on-line in the form of a Victorian shoe with a pointed toe and heel, and a decorative plate above t…

A copper alloy object of uncertain function. It is a thin, lozenge shaped piece of copper sheet probably with two original edges at right angles to one another, suggesting that the fragment is one end of a rectangular plate. The copper has been bent slightly. Another small, thin piece of copper has been inserted through a slit at the end of the larger sheet and folded over; this could possibly be the remains of some kind of dress fastener like a hook and eye. It may be part of a clog clasp similar to SUSS-40E605. The object has a a bright green patina with some patches of light brown.
