Late Medieval - early Post Medieval copper alloy sheet rivet. The rivet has been rolled and the both ends hammered flat suggesting it had been used. Rolled sheet rivets replaced the earlier folded sheet rivets in pot repairs from the late 15th - 16th centuries (Egan 2005:101). A piece of sheet, usually kite shaped was rolled into a cylinder, the short point folded over and the long point pushed through a hole in the vessel and sheet repair. Both ends were then hammered flat to grip the two pieces together. This is a small example and may have been used to rivet a finer thin walled…

A Post Medieval copper alloy rolled rivet dating to the period c.AD 1500 - 1800. The rivet consists of a piece of sheet metal which has been rolled into a tapered cone. A seam runs longitudinally and the top has been flattened to form a flanged disc. A discussion of these rivets can be found in Egan (2005, p.101). Egan suggests that these were a later form of rivet, which took over from the medieval folded staples in the late 15th to the mid to late 16th century and continued in use into the 18th century.
