Copper alloy prick spur fragment. A short (14mm) collared acorn shaped goad springing from the plano-convex heel of a spur and attached by a basal rivet of diameter 2.2mm which was observed on the inside surface of the heel. The site was flanked by a short projection resembling a fleur de lis form, possibly a devolved animal head, and a shorter opposed lug. The broken ends leading to the spur sides are rounded as if by wear, particularly on one side, which may suggest this object was put to some indeterminate use after breakage. The finder kindly identified this object with reference …

Copper alloy Roman spur that consists of a central square plate that has a hole in the centre where an iron prick would have been mounted, this area is now encrusted in iron corrosion. Above this plate is a large rear facing hook, opposite on the base of the plate are two short arms that projects at opposing angles as if to suggest the base of a loop. Arms project either side of the central plate, these are rectangular in cross section with bevelled edges. At the terminal of each arm is a roundel with a pierced centre, both holes are encrusted in iron, a double transverse collar separ…

Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy prick spur fragment, in fair condition. The fragment consists of about half of the arms, which have a sub triangular section and have rounded protrusions on the outer surface, two are present on one side and one on the other. The neck (protruding section) consists of a short shaft with a sub triangular section with a small rounded protrusion on its upper surface. This terminates in a goad (point) with a bi-pyramidal expansion (square in section). It is very similar to an iron spur found at the Coppergate excavations in York, which is…

Romano-British prick-spur (Shortt's Class 1), incomplete, broken D-sectioned sides, the better surviving one of which is beginning to turn back on the outside, originally to form one of two loops, slight collar at conical pointed goad (point missing, length of collared neck and goad >14mm). Width >37mm. Cf. an iron example and discussion of the two mains classes in Antiquairies' Journal 39 (1959), pp61-76, at 65, fig.4. 1st century AD.

Part of a copper alloy prick spur. The spur has plain, relatively straight sides of oval section, widening to D-shape in section towards the goad. This is a small flat triangular point rising directly from the centre of the spur. The dating of this spur is uncertain. Prick spurs were common in the early part of the Medieval period (up to the thirteenth century) but tended to have goads with necks and curved sides, unlike this one. They were superseded by rowel spurs but were popular again for a brief period in the seventeenth century, with straight sides. An Early Medieval date is …
