An object made of sheet metal rolled into a cone with an elliptical open end and a butt seam along one side. The opposite side to the seam, clearly intended as the front, has applied copper wire decoration in the form of a pair of six-petalled flower with prominent central bosses. These are separated and bounded by collars of two strands of twisted copper wire of which there are four along the length of the object, with another surrounded the open end. The terminal tapers and is bent, ending in a small metal cap. Most likely a stem from a ceramic tourist pipe made in Thailand and…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy, probable smoking pipe of post-medievval date, possibly dating to the 19th century. The pipe bowl is in the shape of a riding boot, each side is decorated with two thin parallel lines running vertical, the heel is shown as hollowed out and there is an indentation pattern on the forward part of the sole. The stem eminates from the back of the heal which has a small bore hole approx 2 mm in diameter through to the bowl. There appears to be breaks on both the stem and at the spur. The patina is of a dark green colour. Length: 36.79 mm. Height: 36.34 m…

Post Medieval copper alloy pipe tamper in the form of a claw hammer head. It consists of a circular hammerhead and a wide V shaped claw. Between the two is a sub-rectangular section with a central circular perforation (diameter 7mm) which housed the now missing shaft. The sub-rectangular section has two ridges on either side of the perforation. The other face is plain. Dates to between c1600 and c1850 AD, probably c1750 to c1850 as the tamper is a bit wide for earlier pipes. The length is 65mm, the width is 12mm and the weight 28.89g.

A copper alloy tobacco pipe bowl weighing 34g. The bowl is 41mm in height, with a 40mm long socket for attaching a stem and a small forward pointing spur, which is 6mm long. The top of the bowl has been quite badly dented and distorted with a certain amount of lateral squashing. This means that the side profile would originally have been a little narrower at the rim than it presently appears. Similarly, the stem socket had been bent slightly upwards but would have been straight originally. The end of the socket is rather dented and corroded but it appears to be essentially comple…

A cast copper-alloy pipe tamper combined with signet ring, of Post-Medieval date. The finger ring has an oval bezel which would have borne a seal inscription though this is not legible. At the opposite side of the band to the bezel is the integral pipe tamper. This has a circular knop flaring to a double collar followed by a circular conical shaft. The design is not unlike the cascabel of a cannon. It is possible that the end of the tamper is missing. The entire object has a dark brown. The length is 82mm, the width is 28mm and the weight 22.86g

Complete cast copper alloy pipe dating from the 19th century. David Higgins (Clay Pipe Specialist, Merseyside) suggests that this is an Asian pipe, even though it is difficult to find close parallels for it. It probably is not from as far away as China, Japan or India, but probably the Near East. Dating of these pipes proves difficult because of the lack of good reference works or closely dated examples. However, Mr Higgins doubts that a pipe like this would have found its way to this country much before the 19th century, and this is why he suspects this is the likely date. It is a ve…

Post medieval cast copper alloy pipe fragment, one half of the bowl only, late 18th century or more likely early 19th century. The shape of object is that of half of a clay pipe bowl dating to the mid 18th century, and hollowed on the inside, like a clay pipe bowl, but the material is copper alloy. On the inside there is a sub-hemi-spherical indentation (depth c.2mm, width 3.7mm) at the base of the bowl, and a semi-cylindrical indentation (width 3.9mm) at the side (where the stem would lead from the bowl), with a shallow channel (c.1mm) connecting the two. However the stem would not a…
