A complete cast copper alloy probable netting needle of Roman to post-medieval date, c. AD 200-1900. The object is generally sub-cylindrical with sub-oval-sectioned shaft which tapers to a rounded point. The lower shaft and point are slightly bent. At the other terminal, the object flares to a sub-circular and slightley flattened head measuring 11.1 mm across. This element is perforated with a circular hole set slightly off-centre and 6.1 mm in diameter. The metal's surface is covered in a light layer of corrosion and has an ir…

A probable copper-alloy netting needle of Post Medieval date c. AD 1500-1800. The needle is square in cross-section and bent into a sub circular shape. At one end the needle splits into two flat prongs, forming a sub triangular shaped hole. At the end of the two prongs are circular perforations.  The object has a dark green patina.  Measurements: length (as found) 92.6mm, width 59.5mm, thickness 2.4mm, weight 9 grams A similar, more complete needle has been recorded on the PAS database with circular terminals instead of triangular ones at LON-A0460A. BUC-BB…

Incomplete medieval to post-medieval possible netting needle formed from copper alloy sheet folded into what was once a tube with a butt seam, but now squashed, distorted and in two pieces with an apparently non-recent break.. One end is flattened out and pierced by a round aperture, diameter 3.5mm. The other end appears to have closed by a folded tab as found on possible lace chapes (Egan and Pritchard 1991, nos.1440-3). Unlike this present piece four other copper alloy sheet examples from Lincolnshire widen noticeably towards the pierced end and are very much shor…

Copper alloy possible netting needle. Cast round-section shank with a worn point at one end and collared with a round loop at the other; the loop is thinned by wear on its top edge. The loop rather than a narrower eye distinguishes this from the larger needles used with coarse fabrics, and would only pass easily through a more open mesh. Wear at either end and a smooth surface may confirm the object has seen long use. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500 Length: 79.7mm, Diameter (shank): 5.1mm, Width (at top loop): 9.5mm, Weight: 11.75gms

Copper alloy netting needle fragment. A broad circular sheet metal eye of thickness 0.8mm with a round drilled aperture of diameter 6.2mm, at the end of a round-section and slightly tapered shank of diameter 3.9mm made by rolling the sheet metal below the eye; incomplete. Medieval needles might be either drawn or rolled, but the broad head would permit a use only with either netting or very coarse sackcloth. Copper alloy netting needle. A cast square section rod with a rounded end bearing a drilled hole of diameter 2.3mm at one end, and broken at the other. Now bent to U-shape.The angular sides would prevent fine working with this tool, and would damage fabric unless it were intended to pass through leather. A use stitching or closing either a coarsely woven material such as sackcloth, or, as suggested here, for netting, appears more likely. Nets might be used for fishing, but also for catching birds or rabbits. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Length (as found): 66.3mm, Width:…

Copper alloy probable netting needle. A cast pin with an oval-ended flat head with a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, bent at mid-shank and worn at the head; abraded. There is no gutter next to the hole, in contrast to copper alloy sewing needles from Flixborough and elsewhere. The curved shank might suggest this to be for a specialised task, and is a feature of larger netting needles. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500. A Post Medieval copper alloy netting needle (16th century). The needle has a circular cross-section . The needle has been cast into shape with two terminals forked, and arraged at 90 degrees to each other in profile (length of fork: 14.03mm). The ends of the forks have been pinched together. This sort of fine netting needle would have been used to produce netting for hair nets. Dimensions: length: 114.29mm; width of split end: 2.29mm; diameter: 2.28mm; weight: 3.80g. Copper alloy netting needle. Tube of rolled sheet with an overlapping seam and a hammered and flattened oval end through which a hole of diameter 3.9mm has been drilled. The lower part of the shank is lost, or, given the suggested identification, may never have been present. The wide head and light construction is typical of a netting needle, which would pass through the wide gaps in a net without any need to penetrate dense material. The condition of the object, with an attractive patina as noted by the finder, may suggest a medieval date. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. …

Copper alloy possible needle. Cast D-section rod with a round drilled and lightly countersunk aperture of diameter 3.5mm at an expansion just short of its wider end, tapering to a point at the other end. Now bent. Unusual broad needles are often associated with net making. The flat back to the object would enable its use as a mount or reinforcement, as perhaps on a book cover, but the pointed end would have no role to play in such a setting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length (as found): 40.5mm, Width: 10.2mm, Thickness: 2.4mm, Weight: 5.56gms.

Copper alloy possible netting needle. Needle of rolled sheet metal with a flattened round head with probably drilled aperture of diameter 5.3mm, now torn open; the centre of the aperture lines up with a gutter where the sheet metal is rolled. The wide head may suggest a use as a netting needle or with sacking rather than for finer sewing. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length: 38.9mm, Width: 10mm, Thickness (at head): 1.7mm, Diameter (mid point of shank): 3.8mm, Weight: 2.29gms.
