Copper alloy possible necklace component. An eccentric object probably made in a craft tradition, probably using small items of workshop scrap. These comprise a long narrow tightly coiled spring retained between two sub-rectangular sides, each formed from a straight cabled or twisted strip of wire [diameter 1.1mm] which is bent at either end, and with an oval drawn wire loop of length 8mm at either end. The latter features prompt the suggested identification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: 32.8mm, Width: 6.4mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 2.18gms

Date uncertain, but probably a post-medieval to modern (c.1750-1900) copper-alloy necklace ornament or chain link, cast in the shape of a crescent moon or a C. Decorated with roundels of gems or glass, only one glass inset survives, which gradually become smaller as the item tapers to a point. The back consists of the reversed or outer skins of the roundels. See for parallels BERK-B8DA97 and CAMHER-999AA1 Length: 29.87 mm; Width: 20.03 mm; Thickness: 3.51 mm; Weight: 1.59g

A cast copper-alloy terminal from a necklace clasp of Roman date. It comprises a body that is rectangular in form and section and decorated on all long faces with multiple transverse wavy lines. At each end the object tapers slightly before expanding to a flattened loop. The loops are sub-oval in form and set at ninety degrees to one another enabling attachment of the now missing corresponding hooked terminal of the necklace. Each terminal has a large central circular aperture, one of which has extensive use-wear at its outer edge indicative of where the clasp and hook pieces would ha…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a necklace or armlet or probable Roman to Early-Medieval date. The object terminates at both ends in old breaks, and has suffered from post-depositional damage and corrosion. The body of the object is formed from a tapering rod or hoop that is circular in cross-section and has been bent almost back against itself due to post-depositional damage, narrowing slightly at one end. At the opposite end the hoop expands to a flattened and flaring rectangular terminal(?) that is rectangular in section, its precise form uncertain due to old break…

Possible fitting from a Roman loop in loop type necklace. This is in the form of a square sectioned block 7.7 x 7.0mm x 11.0mm long. Three of its faces bear a broad longitudinal groove flanked by double lines of fine notches, beyond which are two incised lines. The groove retains traces of silvering. There is no groove on the fourth face which bears only the two incised lines. At one end of the block is a 6.7mm diameter integrally cast ring through which threaded a wire loop which shows signs of wear. On the other end of the block is a cylindrical projection decorated with baluster mo…

Cast copper alloy decorative link in a roman necklace. The body of the artefact is rectangular (10mm long) with a gently tapering cross-section (5mm, by 3mm at its widest point) and are decorated with a panel of stamped diagonal hatched lines. At either terminal is a thin rectangular tab with a circular hole in the centre, one has been cast at 90 degrees to the other. This results in one loop arranged on the horizontal plane while the other is on the vertical. Both loops display wear on the outside edge. Length 21mm, width 7.5mm, thickness 7mm, weight 2.03g. Copper alloy Necklace or bangle. Cast round-section rod, thin, but expanding towards collars abutting simple ball terminals. The larger terminal bears a roughly cut angular rebate measuring 3mm by 2mm which is presumably associated with fastening; the smaller terminal bears a corresponding slot. The terminals also retain attractive dense patina which may suggest the surface of the object was originally smooth; it is now roughened by corrosion and has lost most of its patina. The original length is estimated as about 370mm, but the object is now wound into two rough loops. I…

Fragment of Roman copper alloy necklet (or large armlet). It consists of the hook end (the tip of the hook is broken), which is rectangular in section, and expands into a roughly square-section twisted body. Both breaks are old. The necklet measures 121.9mm and weighs 33.54g. The hook end measures 4x2.7mm, expanding to 4.7x3.8mm at the start of the body, and expanding again (over 34.7mm) to 7x5.6mm at the start of the twist. There is some iron staining at this point. The original diameter would have been c.140mm (internal c.120mm). The metal is quite pitted. Armlets of a simil…

A necklace of twisted copper-alloy. Although the necklace is now coiled round its original length may have been about 191mm. The copper-alloy rod was flat and rectangular-shaped in cross-section before it was twisted. This necklace may be complete as one end is oval-shaped and may originally have been a loop and the other end is flat and may have passed through the loop. There is a similar necklace from the Roman small town of Wanborough, Wiltshire (Anderson, Wacher, Fitzpatrick, 2001, p99, fig, 39, No, 138), which is dated to 260 AD.
