Incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy jag for cleaning the barrel of a black-powder musket, 16th century AD. A large cast implement comprising three distinct stages. The uppermost is a rounded or conical terminal with a dimple at its end suggesting the object was worked on a lathe, with five sharp ridges or flanges around it whose crisp definition suggests they were either cut or deepened by cutting. Four symmetrically arranged vertical cross-cuts subdivide these flanges. The second stage is the shaft that has three faces, each with a linear series of triangular facets; the tri…

A Post Medieval to Modern copper alloy musket or pistol, of which only the cast copper alloy trigger guard survives, dating to c. AD1700-1850. The remaining piece is part of the main bow section of the guard, curved, C shaped, with very shallow oval section. It tapers from a clear break at the wide end to a narrow end where the metal has been shaped into a tighter curve with a flat butt with extended head. There appear to be breaks at both ends of this butt, very worn and older than the main break. What is clearly the outer surface shows wea…

A corroded fragment of a late post medieval or early modern musket or pistol (c.1700-1850), of which only the cast copper alloy trigger guard survives. The remaining piece is part of the main bow section of the guard, which is broken off at either end. The deeply arched bow is sub-lenticular in plan and curves to the foot, where it splits into two projections. One element curves inwards pointing towards the broken off foot at the other end while the other bends outwards at right angles, ending at a rivet hole, of which only half survives. The front is decorated with parall…

Copper alloy jag, for cleaning the barrel of a gun, as kindly identified by Steve Toomer; the object was initially identified as a Roman pin head by this reporter. Steve kindly comments: 'while browsing the PAS looking for examples of Pins I came across NLM-017F71 in the records, I was wondering if it may be a Jag, they had oiled cloth wrapped around them for smoothbore rifles & shotguns, examples in the picture below. Although the item you have recorded shows great age it has a striking resemblance to the images of a Jag like the one bottom left [referring to a picture attached to…

Copper alloy musket ramrod pipe. Cast cylinder with an elongated pointed projection at one end with a curved supporting lip of two orders beneath it, and with a worn residual collar - now extending only half way round - at the other end. A rectangular lug with a U-shaped groove is set on top of the mouth of the cylinder at its extended end. A fan of finely incised lines extends along the outer surface of the point. The finder kindly identifies this object as a pipe to retain a ramrod for a muzzle loading musket, formerly fitted below the barrel. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-180…

Copper alloy gun fragment. A thick cast plate with an oval end of plano-convex section bearing two drilled fixing holes of diameter 4mm, and sharply kinked beyond these to continue in two narrowed stages of lentoid section. The fixing point was secured against another, flat, part of the object while its continuation was probably open. Darkened by treatment with oil or lacquer in antiquity. An incomplete, Post Medieval, copper alloy mount, which is probably part of a trigger guard from a musket. The object is sub-rectangular in form and D-shaped in cross section. The object has broken off from where the curved section of the trigger guard would have begun. The object then tapers slightly towards an acorn-shaped terminal, which ends in a point. On the face of the acorn cup, there is evidence of an incised cross-h…

Copper alloy possible musket fragment. A symmetrical pair of cast copper alloy plates with moulded decorative detail, resembling a leaf or wing in their form, brazed to and linked at their upper ends by a round section open loop, and at their lower ends brazed to and linked by the square section arms of a Y-shaped object with a round section screw threaded shank below it. Possibly from the mechanism of a muzzle loading gun; the loops and Y shaped object appear aptly sized to permit a gun barrel to pass through or between them. It is, however, uncertain whether the current orientation …
