Copper alloy metalworking debris. Three scraps of solidified copper alloy melt, the largest including calcareous chips in its surface, along with a cuboid appearance conferred during the cooling of the metal. The largest fragment [of length 70.5mm] has straw or twig impressions on its underside where it had set on a flat surface, and the intermediate fragment has a finely sanded underside pointing to use of a casting bed. Patinated. Found in close association with other offcuts and objects which may have been brought together for recycling; though accompanying objects span a range of d…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. An oval fragment of solidified copper alloy melt of plano-convex section, possibly from the casting ingate at the top of the mould used for casting a small object. The oval flat surface would represent the upper side with shrinkage lines resulting from the cooling of molten metal. The ingate would be broken from the object cast and was presumably intended to go back into the melting pot. This is an unusual example of metalworking debris whose form places it at a particular stage of the casting process, rather than the more common evidence for spillage.…

Copper alloy and silver metalworking debris. A cast wedge-shaped object with a thin flap of copper alloy folded back against one side, with patches of silvery white metal and black areas on either side. It appears the thin flap was folded after the silvery metal had accumulated. This may alternatively be a part-melted or recycled object, perhaps one which had been plated. Had the white metal not appeared, this might have been taken for a vessel foot of similarly indeterminate date – albeit sooting is absent. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 23mm, Width…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. Fourteen fragments of solidified copper alloy melt, mainly solidified dribbles of spillage from casting or pouring, between 17.4mm and 56mm in length. The objects bear a sandy soil with dark traces of charcoal in limited patches trapped in the metal. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1750 Combined Weight: 289.50gms The finder’s detecting colleague, a Mr C---- S-----, had also collected fragments to compare with this and accompanying material, but discarded them at the edge of woodland neighbouring the field where this was found.
