A copper alloy ingot. It is basically rectangular in shape but with rounded ends and a waisted centre. It is flat on the bottom and domed on the top. The base has a series of vertical lines moulded into it which may be a relic of the moulding process. It has an even brown patina with little corrosion or damage. It is difficult to date this type of object, a wide date range has been allocated but it may be relatively recent in date.  Dimensions: 78mm long, 20mm wide and 12mm deep approximately. It weighs 78.35g

A complete copper-alloy ingot of uncertain date. The object is sub-rectangular with a D-shaped section, rounded corners and ends. Often referred to as ‘finger’ shaped. The object is fairly regular in form, suggesting it was cast, and no signs of hammering are present. The metal has a dark green/brown patina and is worn. The object is 54.7mm long, 15.4mm wide, 12.2mm thick and weighs 44.6g. Ingots of this general form in precious metals have been found associated with Early-Medieval hoards such as 2010 T373 (YORYM-CEE620) from Bedale, North Yorkshire. These however g

Copper alloy possible ingot. A small cylindrical pellet, dark in its tint and like a guinea-pig turd in its size and form, with a U-shaped cut-out. Base metal possible ingots of this form have been suggested [by this reporter and few others!] to represent some aspect of a possibly Early Medieval system of bullion exchange, but none of the examples recorded to date have such a cut-out. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 15.5mm, Diameter: 7.8mm, Weight: 2.69gms

A sub-paralellogram copper-alloy 'bun' ingot, of probable Bronze Age date. Especially considering its incompleteness, it is possibly related to another recent 'bun' ingot find: Record ID: CORN-E931FE - BRONZE AGE ingot (finds.org.uk). It has a mid grey-green patina (50%), and a dark grey patina (50%). Dimensions: Length (max), 72mm. Width (max), 47mm. Average thickness, 18mm. Weight: 346g.

A complete copper alloy probable ingot of possible Bronze Age or later dating (2300 BC to 1500 AD). The probable ingot is a pointed oval shape, with a flat lower side and a convex (domed) upper side. No faceting appears to be present around the edges. Multiple air bubbles or casting flaws are present.  It measures 88.0 mm in length, 34.3 mm wide and 9.1 mm thick. It weighs 127.1 g (4.48 oz). The ingot is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. There are areas of bright green copper corrosion present, these areas should be monitored and the ingot stored in a sealed air…

A cast and hammered copper alloy ingot of unknown date. This consists of a small, smooth piece of copper alloy, which is an elongated oval in plan, and slightly wedge-shaped in profile. It was probably hammered on a flat surface to achieve this form, and bears possible hammer-marks on its flat sides. The piece is 22.86mm long, 10.82mm wide and has a thickness of 3.98mm. It weighs 5.17 grams. The lack of diagnostic features makes this type of object difficult to date, beyond saying it must belong somewhere between the Bronze Age to Early Medieval periods. There are a number …

A fragment from a possible Bronze Age cast copper alloy bun ingot. The fragment is only a small portion of the object with one surviving edge which is curved suggesting this was originally circular in plan. It has a flat reverse and convex upper surface creating a sub-triangular cross section. This indicates the ingot would have been domed originally. The reverse is mostly flat and plain whilst the upper surface has more uneven smooth depression. the cross section reveals several hollows created from air pockets in the casting. The object is a dark brown sometimes green colour. The i…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy bun ingot dating to the later middle to late Bronze Age (c. 1150 - 600 BC). The fragment comprises a quarter of an ingot which is plano-convex in section and a quarter circle in plan, with old breaks on two perpendicular sides and the third being curved. The shape suggests an origin in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The surface is pitted, which is likely the result of air bubbles formed during the casting process. Length: 81.1 mm Height: 30.4 mm Width: 64.4 mm Weight: 588 g Similar…

Copper alloy possible ingot. Cast plano-convex section tapered object with a rounded narrower end and a flat, possibly cut, broader end where a short projecting spur of metal may suggest a continuation beyond this point. Also chipped in antiquity at its narrower end. The object now has a mass lying between one averdepois ounce [28.4gms] and the Roman uncia [27.3gms]. A probable Late Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy (brass) 'ingot', dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The finder has had the contents analysed and are as follows: Cu 80.7%; Zn 16.4%; Fe 1.2%; Pb 0.7g.  Brasses of varying compositions were widely used from the Roman period onwards, and are still in use today, so the compositional details pr…

A fragment of a copper alloy 'bun' ingot of probably late bronze age date, c. 1150-600 BC. The fragment forms is plano-convex in cross-section and broadly represents just under a quadrant of a discoidal ingot, the curved outside edge surviving. The breaks are extremely worn with a couple of large rounded voids on one broken edge. The plano-convex discoid form possibly suggests the production in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The ingot is pitted along the outside edge of the convex face, likely due to a mix of impurities in its matrix and the uneven natural m…

An almost complete cast copper alloy ingot of an uncertain date, possibly dating to the Early Medieval period. Description: The object sub-rectangular in plan, with slightly outwardly curved long edges that marginally taper towards the short edges; it is rectangular in cross-section. Its overall shape is reminiscent of a Bronze Age flat axe.  Both short edges of the ingot are incomplete.  The object has an abraded grey-green patina. An unidentified object, probably a fragment of a copper alloy ingot or casting waste of probable Bronze age to early Medieval date (c. 2000 BC - AD 1100). It is sub-triangular in plan and broadly rectangular in cross section. It is patinated green-brown with patches of very bright green. The surface of the ingot is very pitted, which is most likely due to air bubbles forming during the casting process. There are small, sub-circular holes on one face which would support this.
