A copper alloy hinge from a small box, possibly for weights or a balance and of probable post medieval date. The hinge has two plates of identical size and pointed sub triangular shape, both have decorative cusped sides with small terminal points. At the centre of each plate is a circular aperture with three small rivet holes around it. The plates are hinged on an iron spindle which is retained. This is seized in the folded position. The outer surfaces of the plates can't be seen so it is unclear whether there may have originally been any decoration.

An incomplete copper-alloy hinged book or casket fitting of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 - 1700. The fitting comprises an openwork sub-rectangular main plate which tapers to one end and extends to form a fleur-de-lis shaped terminal. A small iron rivet remains off-centre of this terminal. An integral rectangular hinge loop projects from the centre of the opposite end of the main plate with a second iron rivet through it. A copper-alloy axis bar remains through the loop though both ends are broken and worn. The metal has a mid-brown/green patina and is worn. The fitting is 25.6mm lo…

An incomplete copper-alloy hinge, probably of Post Medieval date, c. AD 1500-1800. The object comprises the central pin barrel hinge, connecting two plates. These plates are incomplete and now sub-rectangular in shape. These plates appear to be decoration, although the plate surface is significantly worn, obscuring much of the detail. The hinge is now filled with organic material and ferrous material. The metal has a dark green patina and is very worn. It measures 41.29mm in length, 21.94mm in width, 11.32mm in thickness and 21.59g. There are few similar examples on the PAS dat…

Part of a copper alloy ost Medieval decorative object, probably part of an openwork hinge from a book or box dating from about AD 1600 - 1800. The object is a sub-rectangular incomplete plate with a projecting hinge loop at one end, flanked by crecent shaped cut-outs from the edge of the plate. At the right hand side, the plate is broken across a circular aperture, suggesting it was originally twice as wide with two equally spaced loops. The left edge is straight and original. The bottom edge and right corner is broken across another rounded openwork hole. Measurements …

An incomplete probable Roman copper-alloy hinge dating to circa AD 43-410. The extant piece is broadly rectangular in plan. Along one edge is a hinge mechanism comprised of two cylindrical elements set between a U-shaped median slot which would have socketed the hinge. The body is incomplete, makign the form difficult to determine but it appears to be a broadly rectangular plate of assymetrical width. In the centre is an openwork element which is formed of two crescents, only one of which survives, which may have broadly formed a hear-shape. Positioned above the surviving crescenti is …

A cast Post-Medieval copper alloy hinge pivot dating to c. AD 1600-1900. The hinge itself is a circular cross section rod. This has on right-angled bends creating an L-shaped hook. The hook is circular in section. One end the cylinder widens abruptly with a step and then continues to expand into a wider, flat eneded circular disc. There is a slightly expanded collar placed half way along this expanded section of the rod. The other end of the rod has a blunt, pointed terminal. A complete copper alloy (brass) hinged fitting of post medieval date possibly from a strap fitting from a book cover or bag. The hinge is asymmetrical with two elements, one considerably larger (31.5mm wide) than the other (16.9mm wide). The smaller element is articulated on a single cylindrical lug held between two flanking lugs on the larger element, which has fused solid at an angle of around 120° as a result of the iron spindle running through these lugs having rusted. Both elements have decorative edges with two cusps and three bifurcated projections and lines of fine pun…

A cast copper alloy(?) metal hinged fitting of suspected late medieval or early post medieval date. The fitting is slightly scutiform in shape, with a hollow plate that is openwork and cast in on piece. One end of the plate is open to fit to another (lost) element, the other end flares to a flat edge with a pair of in-line cylindrical lugs. These hold the remains of an iron spindle and clearly articulated to another element such as a catchplate, hasp or opposing hinge piece.  One side of the plate is decorated in gothic style with a fleur-de-lys flanked by a pair o…

An incomplete cast Post-Medieval copper alloy hinge pivot dating to c. AD 1600-1900. The hinge itself is a circular cross section rod. This probably had a central right-angled bend although it has an irregular break just as it begins to turn. The terminal has a plain flattened disc top, beneath which it is decorated by two incised collars. It narrows then forms a small knop, after which it narrows again into the stem. The stem is circular in section and protudes from the collar, terminating at a slight bend into an old patina…

An incomplete, small copper-alloy hinge of Post-Medieval date, probably from furniture or a box dating from around AD 1550 -1700.  It is sub-rectangular in plan rounded shoulders at the end of the plate, and C shaped recesses in the cente of the long edges, with cusps flanking them. The area near the hinge has worn edges, but they probably originally had trilobed projections on each side. At the hinged end, the middle of the plate extends into a tibe round the iron axis bar.
