Incomplete copper alloy Medieval vessel. The vessel has a piriform shape with a bulbous lower body that narrows towards the neck. The upper neck has two small diametrically opposed looped handles. The exact purpose of these artefacts is unknown. It was initially thought (Geoff Egan, pers. comm.) that they may have been used as containers for mercury, but the discovery of an example in Surrey with the inscription OLEVM CHRISM, (see SUR-FA2AB0) suggested a possible new interpretation as a flask for holy oil from a travelling chrismatory. The chrismatory was comprised of a set of three h…

A bulb shaped copper alloy flask, of a type thought to have been used for holy oil during the late medieval period. The rim of the vessel is missing, due to an old irregular break. On each side there are the stubs of integral, semi-circular loops, one of which is detached from the body. The diameter at the neck is 17.2mm and it widens gradually to a maximum diameter of 31.8mm before narrowing to a flattened base (unlike others recorded on the database, which are rounded and presumably would not stand upright). There is minor surface loss, presumably from antiquity, as a well…

Complete, but broken, cast copper alloy vessel of Medieval date. The vessel is shaped like an ampulla, with a bulbous rounded body that tapers in width to a narrow neck. Two semi-circular loops form handles, one at either side of the opening. Unlike the typical pilgrim souvenirs, it is not made of lead alloy. The vessel has a deep greenish-gray patina with some suface pitting. The neck of the vessel is broken but the two fragments that complete this artefact were recovered along side indicating post-depositional damage. The inside of the vessel has been completely filled with a lea…

A small cast copper alloy flask or bottle-like vessel of uncertain purpose but probably of post medieval date. The vessel, which is 35.62mm in height and 28.50mm in diameter, has a flaring rim on a long neck (13.14mm diameter) and a rounded base with clear base angle. There is a large ragged hole in the lower half of the vessel. There must remain the possibility that this object is not a vessel but a fitting of a different type.

A copper-alloy shot flask, in two parts, of the first half of the 19th century. The flask is made of sheet copper-alloy that has been machine punched to add a decorative design of hung game. The design comprises of a rabbit or hare hung by its feet from a chain loop and four fowl, probably pheasant or partridge, with foliage at the base of the flask. The technique of machine punching starts in the 19th century and the use of shot flasks ended towards the middle of the same century allowing a relatively short date range for the artefact to be determined. The flask has a globular or pea…

A cast copper alloy flask which may have been used as a flask for holy oil, of probable medieval date. The finder did not record measurements, but it is likely that they're similar to one of the other holy oil flasks found in England (c. 56.9mm high and weighs 69.3g). It has a circular profile and a convex base with a maximum diameter of c. 40mm which narrows to c. 20mm at the top. On opposite sides, just below the circular opening, there are two flat sub-rectangular handle/suspensions lungs. Both have a small round perforation in the upper centre, presumably either for suspension or t…
