Copper alloy drill bit. Cast round section shank of diameter 6.5mm, slightly expanded at its mid point, with a square section four-sided tapered point of length c.25mm with sharp arises between its faces at one end; and rounded at the other. A probably separate collar is brazed to the latter end; the collar bears deep closely-spaced diagonal cuts all around to enable the bit to be gripped by a turning mechanism. The use of copper alloy would suggest a use in the piercing of thick leather, perhaps for saddlery or related crafts, as from Roman times onwards iron tools would have been us…
