An incomplete tripod cauldron of the Medieval period. It is rounded, with a wide rim. The three legs are present, one does not appear to match and this may be the result of a later repair. One of the legs (it is not clear if this is the mismatched one) is now detached. The two handles are triangular, mounted under the rim. A lot of the body of the cauldron is missing, although the weight of what remains is still substantial. Nevertheless it holds its shape and is an exceptional find as these would mostly have been recycled when too damaged to use further in the peri…

A broken leg/foot fragment from a Medieval/Post Medieval, cast, copper alloy, from a probable small cauldron. Broken upper narrow section tapering down to a slightly wider foot with tri-lobed cross-section. There was once a decorative transverse groove across the upper surface which created a weakness and probably contributed to the fracture at this point. There is some wear and an attractive dark green patina, once probably coated with a black lacquer. This is likely to date between 1200-1699. Ref. History Beneath Our Feet, Brian Read, Anglia Publishing Ipswich 1995, page 94…

A fragment of Medieval-Post Medieval cast copper alloy cauldron, c.AD 1300-1600. A heavily worn and corroded foot of a large cauldron. This foot has a flat base and a central ridge along the obverse face, which sloped upwards towards the broken section where the leg would have attached. The tip of the foot is heavily worn, but may have been shaped loke a lion's foot. The metal appears very solid with few inclusions typical of lower-quality cookware.

A fragment of a Medieval-Post Medieval copper alloy pot leg, c.AD 1200-1650. The object is of triangular section and undecorated. It expands at the base to a large, wedge-shaped foot. The size suggests it may have belonged to a cauldron. It has a patchy light green/brown patina, with no indication of soot staining. Various pot legs are illustrated in Egan, G. 1998. The Medieval Household. Daily Living c.1150-c.1450, page.164, figure. 132.

A fragment of a Medieval to Post-Medieval copper-alloy cooking vessel foot dating to c.AD 1300-1600. Possibly a foot from a cauldron. The foot is sub-triangular in cross section, with a flat back and two tiers of ridges. These ridges run vertically along the leg of the cauldron until near the base of the foot, where a single collar seperates the base from the leg. This collar is decorated by a series of diagonal lines. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels such as cauldrons and skillets were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler et al. A broken leg/foot fragment from a Medieval/Post Medieval, cast, copper alloy, probable small cauldron. Broken upper wide section, tapering down towards the foot with trilobed cross-section. There is an unusual either moulded or drilled out narrow groove across the upper surface from the flat back surface towards the ridged front surface. This has created a weakness and probably contributed to the fracture at this point.
