A cast and gilded copper alloy bridle boss of probable Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500-1680. Description: The mount has a central image depicting the Gorgon Medusa, bordered by a rim with (originally) seven projections in the form of human busts. One of these is now missing. Between each of these is a three-lobed motif reminiscent of a vase flanked by two scrolling lines. The border is pierced by three circular rivet holes placed around the head at approximately 12, 4 and 8 o'clock. The hole at 8 o'clock (5mm) is larger than the other two (4mm).The object has a rough, mid-green …

An incomplete Post-Medieval to Modern lead alloy decorative roundel, possibly a bridle fitting dating c. 1750-1880. The object is circular in plan and umbonate with a raised central circular field decorated in cast relief with four equidistant round pellets each separated by two radiating parallel bars. The plate is pierced with a small sub-circular aperture set slightly off centre. The central field is bound with an outer annular border enclosed within raised circumferential lines filled with a row of raised sub-oval pellets. Only a short length of the outer rim remains the…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast one-piece T-shaped moulded fitting comprising a ring of three annular components with a longitudinal aperture of diameter 12.7mm, differentially heavily worn at one side of one end, and with an integrally cast lug of two bun-shaped parts of diminishing size set at right angles to the channel. Fresh corrosion at the flat end of the smaller bun may suggest another component or a decorative feature has been lost. Damage or a casting flaw appears on that side of the object opposite the two-staged lug. The finder kindly suggests a functional conne…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-977F74. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been partly concealed by its explosive corrosion. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 30mm long which appears to have been integrally cast with the sheathed band probably concealed further iron and now has an open end of diameter 7.7mm with very corroded iron within. The pear-shaped housing is now set at an angle to the rest of the band. These objects are familiar from the ‘chario…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-97F082. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing of a concavo-convex or U-section copper alloy strip – possibly the relict of a copper alloy sheath which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been lost to its explosive corrosion. A glossy patch shows where the crumbling iron has been consolidated with glue by the finder, and its extent now seems excessive compared to its surviving sheathing. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 32mm long which appears to have been integral…

A Post Medieval to Modern incomplete copper-alloy snaffle bit, dating to circa AD 1750-1950.  The object has a central bar with a curved semi circular arm projecting from it. The object would have presumably once had an opposing semi circular arm which is now missing. One terminal of the central bar is damaged and incomplete and comprises of two curved projections. The opposing end is also damaged and incomplete. The object has a green coloured surface patina.  Another damaged incomplete parallel is recorded from Kent (KENT-144283). Although this record has b…

An incomplete late Early Medieval cast copper-alloy bridle bit link, c.AD 1000-1100. This fitting has a rectangular shaft that is D-shaped in section with flat back and rounded front face. At one end of the shaft is the remains of a heavily-worn dome-shaped boss. From both ends of the shaft extends an integrally cast, circular loop, missing its outer edge due to wear and old breaks.
