A copper-alloy box, leather pouch, beads and paper of 20th century date. The box contained two pages from the Quran? as well as 4 beads (3 teal, 1 yellow). The yellow bead has since dried out and broken. There is also a small piece of fabric still inside the box. The box is rectancular in plan with a hinged lid. The outside of the box is decorated with a stippled, snakeskin pattern. The lid of the box has a single, red, oval stone in the centre. In each corner there is an empty circular field where there might have been similar stones. The box was found inserted inside a leather pouch.…

The lid is hinged and would originally have been attached to the outer case of the set, and it retains its hinge-lug, though this is now broken through. Three sub-rectangular struts are situated on the upper side of the lid: two arranged in a V shape emerging from one side and a single in between the V from the other side, this latter now truncated. Pressed metal wallet for postage stamps, as kindly suggested by the finder, comprising a rectangular plate of thickness 0.3mm whose longer edges are crimped and from which project opposed flaps which partly close the back. A pair of rolled lugs to retain a hinged fastener project from one short end and a U-shaped catch is set centrally on the other short end, so another back plate is probably lost. Any hinge projections and the lid are lost. At some stage, probably after the lid broke off, it was used as an anvil of sorts. On the inside there are many cutmarks from a chisel. It probably dates between c1400 and c1750 AD, but may be earlier. The diameter is 37mm, thickness 14mm, and the weight is 41.50g.
