A small body fragment of a cast, copper-alloy Sompting Type socketed axe of early Iron Age date, about 800 BC - 600 BC. Only a small sub-rectangular section of the main body of the axe survives with the breaks indicating its fragmentation in antiquity. The reverse is plain but the front face has two parallel ribs, each terminating in a pellet-in-circlet motif. The fragment is 24.3mm long, 21.4mm wide and 7.5mm thick. It weighs 16.4g. Compare SF-581FD5,  FAKL-FB5DF6 and DOR-8496B6. A complete example is YORYM-FB2336 which notes that Rib-and-circle, rib-and…

Bronze age copper alloy axe blade fragment, 27mm in length, 14mm wide and 6mm thick with a weight of 3.14g. The object is sub triangular in form and cross section and consists of a corner of a blade of a probable socketed axe. It has a slightly curved and damaged blade, 1mm thick at its tip. The fragment then widens out and is solid, but in a very damaged state. It was found in the same location as other prehistoric metal fragments (see LEIC-544574 and LEIC-54F15A) suggesting it may have been gathered for re-working?

The 'cutting' edge is rounded, from the external edges it tapers gradually until it forms a narrowed but rounded but. There is no sign of a stop ridge or any form of cast design. It is thickest at the mid-point. The surface of the blank is heavily eroded and corroded, small areas of original patinated surface survive but on…

Copper alloy, possibly votive, small axe pendant, probably Roman in date (c AD43-300). The pendant consists of a triangular axe-shaped body and a circular attachment loop, with a raised collar between the body and loop. The loop hole is set at the same angle to the 'blade', which suggests it may have served another function other than as a pendant. The object is chunky and the blade has a wide tip. No close comparison could be found, though the green patina is consistent with a Roman date. See records BERK-30CF41 and NARC-5E5A98 for similar objects.
