A probable bent plate fragment from an animal collard dating to the 18th century AD. The fragment consists of a mostly rectangular plate that is flat in cross section but which has been warped into a convex arc in profile. At one narrow terminal there is a D-shaped projecting tab that is narrower than the plate (16.6mm wide) whilst at the corners of the opposite narrow edge there are two narrow rectangular projections that fold over 360 degrees to form cylindrical hinges. Corroded material remains in these hinges possibly all that remains of an iron axis bar. On the reverse of the pla…

A late post medieval to modern (c AD 1700 - 1850) cast, two piece, copper alloy attachment from a dog collar. It is slightly curved in profile and has been hinged in the middle, but the missing pin means the pieces detach. It is rectangular in shape with rounded ends. On the reverse are two largish rivets, at each end of the pieces, one with metal washer still attached, keeping a fragment of leather from original collar in situ, the other is just a stud. The obverse has an engraved inscription, the first word, possibly the owners name illegible due to loss of surface, the rest reads, …

An incomplete cast copper alloy hinged and inscribed plate / strap fitting of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1550-1700). The artefact most probably comes from a hinged dog collar. The plate is rectangular in plan and cross section but is distorted by movement in the ploughsoil. One end of the plate is broken but abraded whilst the other is bifurcated and wrapped around a simple iron axis bar forming a hinge with a second similar plate (now lost). The upper surface of the plate is inscribed with a series of letters ARD MYT - these are all well formed with clear bl…

Post Medieval copper alloy dog collar belonging to Samuel Birch of Shilton near Burford in Oxfordshire and dated 1676 on the collar. The collar is a flat strip 41.1mm wide by 1.9mm thick and still bent into a circle with overlapping ends and weighs 335g. The circle is a maximum of 164mm across, although the iron rivets show there was previously more overlap so the diameter would have been smaller, c.140mm. The end of the strip on the inside is square while the end on the outer side has the corners cut at an angle with a straight edge in the centre creating a trapezoid end. There…

A late 18th Century inscribed copper-alloy dog collar comprising two hinged elements, with a rivet and rove or nut on each, and an iron hinge bar. The plate was found in two pieces some months apart. The legend reads THE RT HON THOMAS HARLEY HORLEY SURRY (The Hon Thomas Harley of Hooley (1730-1804)). The place given is a mistake as Harley lived at Hooley House in Hooley, not in Horley.
