Copper alloy possible anti-aircraft shell fragment. A shard from the slightly everted rim of a cylindrical object vessel of estimated diameter 80mm with iron staining at the top; shattered at either side and along its lower edge. The pattern of catastrophic damage might point to a shard from an exploded anti-aircraft shell, which would be consistent with its suspected diameter. The iron staining may alternatively indicate this object had a place in an assembly of iron or steel parts intimately associated with or enclosed by a thick [5.5mm] copper alloy casing – a definition which…

Copper alloy anti-aircraft shrapnel fragment. Cast fragment of the casing of an anti-aircraft shell with grooves on either side running in opposite directions so as to maximise fragmentation; torn by explosive force. This shell will have been fired by one of the numerous heavy anti-aircraft batteries tasked with the defence of the Humber region. Copper alloy possible shell fragment. A curved dentiform cast fragment broken on all sides but one, which bears a circumferential groove of estimated diameter 80mm. The catastrophic nature of damage may suggest explosive force, and hence an identification as a shard from a heavy anti-aircraft shell is advanced. Copper alloy and lead anti-aircraft shell fragment. Cast solid lead nose cone and three-part calibrated driving band from a large explosive shell, retaining a screw-threaded part of the wall offset below the lowest of the stages of the driving band. The internal features include a central hollow lug, lightly flared, and part of the rounded wall of the main part of the shell. The copper alloy components are distorted by the catastrophic force of an explosion while the nose cone is dented, abraded and stained white in patches. From the defence of the Humber region by heavy anti-aircraft …

Copper alloy anti-aircraft shell splinter. A fragment of shell casing from a heavy anti-aircraft shell, bearing broad grooves across both its sides, set at right angles to each other so as to maximise its fragmentation. All the edges of the object have been torn by catastrophic explosive force. The Humber was defended by numerous fixed anti-aircraft batteries, and splinters from the shells they fired at attacking aircraft are widely reported. Copper alloy anti-aircraft shell fragment. A concavo-convex fragment of a cast cylindrical shell casing, torn on all sides with catastrophic force; the function is also suggested by two grooves running at right angles to each other across the outer surface which were features intended to maximise fragmentation. Copper alloy anti-aircraft shell shrapnel. Two fragments of the casings of heavy anti-aircraft shells, of length 38.5mm and 49.5mm. Both fragments bear broad grooves on both sides running at right angles to each other to maximise their fragmentation, and both have opposed edges which have torn raggedly and cleanly at the instant the shells exploded. These fragments attest to the defence of the Humber region by heavy anti-aircraft batteries during the Second World War, of which one remains as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the vicinity of the [admittedly broad] find-spot for these spl…

Copper alloy possible shell splinter. A distorted fragment of a flat-sided cast object with a ridge and groove along one edge, possibly with the edge of a series of rounded apertures. Blackened. The distortion of a thick [2.8mm] casting may arise from an explosion, though this shard lacks the bilateral grooving intended to maximise the fragmentation of the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell. It may come from the edge of a grooved zone or from another part of a shell. If not from a shell, this is possibly a machine part which has experienced sudden and catastrophic failure. Suggeste…

Copper alloy shrapnel fragment. Cast shard from the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell, with grooves on either side running in opposite directions to maximise fragmentation at the detonation of the shell; jaggedly broken. Copper alloy anti-aircraft shrapnel fragment. A sub-rectangular fragment of a cast casing, with wide shallow grooves oriented in opposite directions on its two sides, and with its edges torn by explosive force. This is from the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell. The grooved surfaces were intended to maximise the fragmentation of the shell, which would usually explode at a predetermined altitude, hopefully near enemy aircraft. This shard was probably deposited during the defence of Grimsby and the Humber against German attack during the Second World War. Suggested date: Modern, 193…

Copper alloy shell fragment. A splinter from a heavy anti-aircraft shell, with straight grooves running in opposite directions on its two sides, and with opposed edges torn raggedly with explosive force. The grooved surfaces were intended to maximise the fragmentation of the shell as it burst at a pre-set altitude, thereby improving the chances of disabling its target. Copper alloy ammunition fragment. A cylindrical cartridge case for a 20mm cannon shell, with a basal indentation and stamped characters S L 43 on the base, possibly denoting manufacture in 1943; crimped towards the top to retain the projectile part of the round. A basal dot and incuse ring may indicate the shell has been fired. This might have come from the armament of a fighter plane, or from a light anti-aircraft gun on the ground, presumably from the Second World War. Copper alloy cartridge case. The cylindrical case from a 20mm cannon shell, a weapon which was deployed as the armament of aircraft, particularly German, and also used for light ant-aircraft guns. Notation appears on the flat base of the case: 4 / 3 / T / W. Burnt material including fine strands is retained within; these are the remnants of a propellant charge, and perhaps an indication that the shell was exploded in a fire rather than on active service; the upper edge is broken. Copper alloy possible shell fragment. Cast concavo-convex disc with a screw-threaded edge and with two small [diameter 2.7mm] holes in opposite sides, and a third, larger hole occupied by a screw whose shank is broken flush with the underside of the object. A central hole is slightly distorted, as is the profile of the object. The finder kindly suggests this may come from the nose cone of an explosive shell. Copper alloy possible ammunition fragment. A fragment of a solid cast lightly concavo-convex object of estimated diameter 40mm with a central aperture, possibly of diameter 16.1mm, and with a circumferential groove on its convex face. The object has been fractured and distorted, probably with explosive force. This condition may suggest this to be a fragment from the nose or fuse of a light shell, possibly from an anti-aircraft gun, though the find spot could allow it to have been fired from either land or sea.
