A Post Medieval copper alloy Irish 'gun money' shilling of James II (England: AD 1685-88, Ireland: AD 1685-91). Issued in AD 1690 possibly in September (Spink 6582). Limerick mint. Spink (2003: 171). Coin is chipped around the edge thus obscuring most of the legend on both faces. For a comparable example see PAS record SUR-7C47AA. Here, Maslin (2021) states that shilling such as these were part of the emergency coinage issued by James II as he attempted to recover the English throne during the 17th century Williamite-Jacobite war (AD 1689-91). A copper alloy post medieval Irish farthing of James II (1685-1691), minted in Limerick in 1691. Limerick was beseiged by William of Orange's troops in 1690-1691, during the Williamite War. Coins like this were struck over earlier 'gunmoney' shillings, which were official token coins issued by the Jacobites. Gunmoney was intended to be exchanged for sterling silver once the war was won.

Diameter: 32.7 mm Thickness: 2.5 mm Weight: 13.6 g These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
