A copper alloy post medieval Irish farthing of James II (1685-1691), minted in Limerick in 1691. Limerick was beseiged by William of Orange's troops in 1690-1691, during the Williamite War. Coins like this were struck over earlier 'gunmoney' shillings, which were official token coins issued by the Jacobites. Gunmoney was intended to be exchanged for sterling silver once the war was won.

A copper-alloy post-medieval Irish 'hibernia' halfpenny of James II, dating to AD 1691. HIBERNIA reverse, depicting Hibernia seated left and holding a cross. These 'hibernias' are a type of 'gun money', a coinage issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne. They were the last attempt to establish such a coinage before giving up in 1691. To produce these 'hibernias', shillings were recoined as halfpennies or farthings in the Irish town Limerick. A copper alloy 'Gun Money' shilling of James II. These coins were issued in Ireland during the Williamite war of 1689 -1691, and were made from recycled metals, with the notion that they could be redeemed for face value after a Jacobite victory. This coin bears the date 1690 on the reverse, and the month 'June' beneath the crown. This late date suggests it was struck at the Limerick mint.
