'Cogwheel' brooch, basically circular in outline with a zigzag edge comprising 18 V-shaped projections. Within the zigzag edge there is a grooved border, and then there are four roughly D-shaped perforations forming a cross shape. At the centre of the cross is a raised boss with a lozenge-shaped groove around, and a groove runs from each corner of the lozenge along each of the arms of the cross to meet (or nearly meet) the border. Each arm of the cross is expanded to accommodate two small round bosses at the terminal. There could have been much more decorative detail than this origina…

Rather fine Aesica brooch of ‘closed’ form. The wings are semi-cylindrical, open at the back for the (missing) spring, and with a rear-facing hook in the centre. There are traces of ?solder at either end of the spring channel. The front of each wing is decorated with a broad oblique groove with a narrow parallel groove just within it. There are traces of a second narrow groove at the end of the wing. The bow has similar decoration, of two broad vertical grooves each flanked by a pair of narrow grooves. The bow flares to the highest point of the curve and then tapers again sha…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Middle or late Anglo-Saxon strap-end made of very dark brown copper alloy. The back half of the split end is broken off and the 2 original rivets at the end have been joined by a third inserted through the fan-shaped motif, probably an attempt at repair. The end is shaped and the fan motif is a simple fan-shaped groove. The rivets are all either iron or the same brown copper alloy; only their heads survive. Between the rivets and the animal-head terminal, the sides of the strap-end are scalloped - 4 on each side - with a bold curved groove in each one. Between is a rectangular panel o…

Disc brooch, flat and plain edged originally but now bent and missing most of its edges. Originally it was c. 33-35 mm in diameter, and decorated with a raised border and 2 inner rings, the innermost of which is distinctly wider. In the centre and between the rings there would have been enamel; there are traces of red enamel in the inner ring but no trace of enamel in the central dot or outer ring. On the reverse is a double pin bar lug with the spring surviving on the ?iron bar, and the remains of a catchplate. Cf. Hattatt no. 1027, 1028. 2nd century AD.

Possibly part of a chatelaine. A circular-section copper-alloy rod 3 mm in diameter, with each end flattened and pierced. The centre is also flattened and pierced. Although the rod is now bent out of shape, it appears that there was an original sharp bend down to each flattened pierced part. One half is now bent round in a circle, and the other half is straightened out. If the rod is turned on its side (looking at the flat parts in section) decoration can be seen, consisting of a transverse groove with three oblique grooves to either side. This motif occurs three times, twice …
