A cast copper alloy coin weight of Post-Medieval date. It is square in shape with bevelled edges and extensive parallel toolmakrs on both front and back faces. The front face depicts a ship with tall mast within an inner circle. The ship appears to have a rose at the centre of the hull, which would indicate the weight's usage for weighing whole and fractional denominations of the Ryal. The weight measures 15.30mm in width, 14.94mm in length, 4.70mm in thickness, and weighs 7.44g (or 114.81 grains).
In their study of coin weights Withers and Withers indicate that square weights with…

A cast copper alloy ryal coin weight of late medieval date. The flat square uniface coin weight measures 15mm by 14.9mm by 4.4mm and weighs 7.1g. Its original weight should have been 120 grains (7.8g). The front depicts a king with sword and shield standing in a ship, although it has been struck rather off-centre so it is not possible to see the king's head.

A copper alloy coin weight which is circular. The weight has a diameter of 17.1mm and is 4.1mm thick. It weighs 6.5g. The weight is marked on one side with an image of a ship. The ship has a large prow and stern, both decorated with crosses, and a mark on the hull which may be a rose. This could indicate that the weight is for measuring a Ryal coin (a gold denomination). The weight could also be for a noble without the rose. There is rigging above the ship, and a possible motif to the right of the top of the mast which is not clear enough to decipher. The reverse is plain. The metal ha…

Copper alloy coin weight. A circular, uniface weight for the Ryal (a gold denomination). The weight shows a ship with a rose on the hull (indicating that this is for the Ryal), a lion above the prow and a lis above the stern. The image is similar to that which appears on the actual coin. Such weights were used to check that coins offered in payment or for exchange were the proper weight.

A cast copper alloy coin weight. The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in section with rounded corners. The weight is uniface, decorated with a heavily abraded ship with a large shield on the side. The weight has patches of a shiny mid green patina. It measures 17mm diameter and weighs 5.5g.
The use of round weights with representations of a coin were used in the 15th century (Biggs, N. 1992 English Weights: An Illustrated Survey White House Publications p. 26). The size of the weight is similar to that for a ryal (Biggs:27).
