Cast copper alloy Roman finger ring with a hoop that is D-shaped in section and in profile, with a flat sub-rectangular bezel. The bezel is decorated with a raised figure of Mars, helmeted, with a spear in his right hand and resting on a shield to the right with his left hand, all within a raised oval border. The ring shows considerable corrosion with and overall brown-green patina and some loss of detail on the shoulder obscuring the figures head. The bezel is 12mm long and 6.6mm wide and 1.3 mm thick. The ring is approximately 18 mm in diameter, the hoop is 3 mm in width flaring to 5…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete probable copper-alloy tanged chisel, or trunnion tool, likely dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 cal BC). It has a light green-grey patina. It probably belongs to the metalworking tradition phase VIII - IX, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 5; circa 1500-1150 cal. BC. In profile, you can clearly see where it has been heavily used on one edge. It is sub-rectangular in plan with the trunnions, projecting out 11.5mm and 6.5mm from the sides. However, it is missing its butt end, as there is a post-depositional break just above th…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small seal matrix, of probable Medieval dating (1200-1400 AD), featuring decoration of two semi circles, separated at their straight edges by three horizontal dots. It is possible that the slightly larger semi-circle was intended to represent a simplified form of an animal; perhaps a bear or boar. While it is in an overall good state of preservation, the loop appears brittle. From the handle flowing down into the seal matrix itself, the shape changes slightly. Nearer the handle it is more hexagonal, but upon reaching the seal matrix itself, it rounds out into a circular shape. …

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A jetton, of probable post-Medieval origin. It appears to be decorated with a lamb and flag. It has a mid grey-green patina (90%), and a light grey-green patina (10%). It has later been given two holes, which would suggest it was re-used as a button. However, as these two holes are not central to the jetton, it would suggest that it is incomplete, and the original full-sized jetton would have been much bigger. Dimensions: Remaining diameter (max): 22mm. Thickness, 1mm. The holes: Diameter (larger), 4mm. Diameter (smaller), 3mm. Weight: 1.75g.

The frame of the buckle is circular in shape, with bevelled sides, and features a cross-bar, which has been soldered onto the underside of the frame. Possibly a pommel for the butt end of a knife handle. Due to its patina, it appears to be a post-Medieval example. It is copper-alloy, but appears to be more zinc-rich than other copper-alloyed objects on the database. It has a light grey-green patina. Eventhough it has been somewhat crushed during deposition, it is still possible to ascertain that it was originally sub-square in shape. Its design (on its outer face) features two more squares, oneinside the other, etched into the metal, and within the central square, there are etched lines radiating out in all directions from the…

Roughout of a Bronze Age flanged axehead. It has a dark bown-black patina (80%), and in parts, a mid blue-patina (20%), and seems to be suffering from Bronze Disease. It is an object that to its left side looks relatively intact, but to its right side, has noticeable pocking, indicative of where water entered the mould during casting, and so the axehead is misformed. Despite its clear miscasting, its form is still distinguishable. It is particularly interesting that such a miscast item should survive, considering most miscast metalwork would have been re-melted, and cast again. …

It appears to be a jetton associated with the historic Duchy of Gelders, probably dating from the late 14th century and issued by Mathilde de Gueldre (Duchess of Gelders, from 1371 to 1379). The Duchy of Gelders was a historical Duchy, previously a county, in the Holy Roman Empire, located in the Low Countries.
