An incomplete copper-alloy pin of uncertain date, Roman to Post-Medieval, c.AD 43 – 1700. The head of the pin is broadly plano-convex with a flat base and irregular rounded top. An integral circular sectioned shank extends from the centre of the base of the head, terminating in a worn break. The metal has a delaminated dark green patina and is worn. The pin is 22.2mm long, 17.4mm in diameter at the head, 1.2mm in diameter at the shank and weighs 1.3g. This pin does not appear to sit within known typologies of Roman or Early-Medieval pins which may suggest it is later in date t…

A probable pin head of uncertain date, possibly medieval (c. AD 1350-1400) Cast copper-alloy biconical faceted head with four triangular sides on the upper and lower half. Each face carries an amorphous design of ridges and stamps. Shaft is missing. Length: 8.70 mm; Width: 9.35 mm; Weight: 0.86g A similar copper-alloy pin with biconical faceted head is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (2001, 300; no. 1476), though this is pentagonal rather than lozenge shaped. Egan and Pritchard (2001, 302) date the period of use specifically of pins with pentagonal heads to Lon…

A fragment of a lead possible pin head of unknown, possibly Roman cAD 50 - 410. It is a three dimensional representation of a head and upper torso. It  is heavily degraded and corroded and it is not possible to pick out features. The figure may be holding something to its chest. At the base there appears to be an early break, at which point any shank may have been lost Dimensions: 24.3mm in length/height; 11.6 x 9.1mm wide (body); 8.42g in weight Some similarities with BUC-544E73

Copper alloy possible pin, as kindly suggested by the finder. A drawn wire pin of shank diameter 1.1mm with sharp point, continuing as two or three intertwined loops. A thinner [diameter 1mm] drawn wire is looped around the largest of the ‘pin head’ loops to project as a second point beyond four tightly wound curls formed by its other end. The form recalls that of wire finger rings of the early medieval period, and also of post-medieval clasps constructed of wound wire. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 800-1800 Length (as illustrated): 49.5mm, Widt…

A complete copper alloy pin, of uncertain, possibly Post Medieval date. The find has a pierced spherical head, decorated with a raised circular collar of multiple grooves above and a knop at the top. A copper alloy loop, now sub-circular due to being bent, is threaded through the pierced hole. Below the piercing is a raised collar of multiple grooves. Below this the top of the pin flares out slightly as though acting as a cover to the pin shaft. The pin shaft is sub square in section and bend slightly towards the distal end. There is a tiny perforation hole 1.8mm below the pin head bu…

A heavily worn copper-alloy pin of Bronze Age to early medieval date. Description: The pin has a circular head which narrows gradually to form the shank. The pin is heavily pitted with a light-mid green patina and some brown mottling. A copper alloy probable dress or hair pin, of uncertain date, Roman to medieval, AD 43 - 1500 It is also possible that it is part of a panannular brooch or another object. It has a sub-spherical head, with a slightly flattened top, above a narrow, circumferential collar. The head and collar are made separately to the shaft. The shaft is circular in cross-section and the point is broken away and is missing. There is a narrow groove running the full length of the shaft from beneath the collar to the break in the shaft, suggesting that the shaft was rolled from a sheet of metal. The pin…

A complete copper-alloy pin dating from the Roman to medieval periods. The pin has a flat circular head, on which little decoration remains aside from a faint beaded border inset slightly from the edge on one face. Striations are present on both faces. The shaft is circular in cross-section and is bent just below the midway point. The pin measures 61.1mm in length, 2mm in diameter at the shaft, 14.8mm in diameter at the head, and 0.5mm in thickness at the …

An incomplete copper alloy probable pin of unknown date. An elongated strip of circular cross-sectioned wire. One end expands slightly towards a blunt tip and the other, narrower end is split in two. The object has been bent into a C-shape. Although some early medieval pins have split and coiled heads, this does not appear to be an example of one of these as the split end is not obviously incomplete and the wider end should instead be pointed. The exact function of this object is therefore uncertain. Length: 25.00mm, width: 26.02mm, diameter of thicker end: 3.06mm, weight: 1.80g

The pin narrows evenly from this end down its entire length to a point (c.0.9mm diameter). The final sixth of the pin closest to the point is smoothly bent so that the point is at about 50 degrees.
