Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Triangle of thin sheet metal with two rounded corners and two tiny [diameter 1.1mm] holes, one blind. Possibly for a small value from a set of chemist’s weights. The discovery of a scale of Roman lorica squamata (NLM-C42002) which also has cut corners, reported along with this object, might alternatively suggest this to be another piece of scale armour, albeit of different form. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1850

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy disc brooch. A large plain disc with the stub of a small integrally cast loop at its edge; the loop coincides with the position of long paired U-shaped lugs on the back which retained a hinged pin; the stub of a small catch plate lies at the opposite edge of the plate. The lack of rust stains – a diagnostic trait for a brooch fastened with an iron pin – could suggest a Roman date, as might the length of the lugs at the pin seat [as discussed in the PAS Guide to brooches], though the disc form is more usually regarded as Anglo-Saxon. A Roman date is perhaps more…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible ingot. A small cylindrical pellet, dark in its tint and like a guinea-pig turd in its size and form, with a U-shaped cut-out. Base metal possible ingots of this form have been suggested [by this reporter and few others!] to represent some aspect of a possibly Early Medieval system of bullion exchange, but none of the examples recorded to date have such a cut-out. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy metalworking debris. Three scraps of solidified copper alloy melt, the largest including calcareous chips in its surface, along with a cuboid appearance conferred during the cooling of the metal. The largest fragment [of length 70.5mm] has straw or twig impressions on its underside where it had set on a flat surface, and the intermediate fragment has a finely sanded underside pointing to use of a casting bed. Patinated. Found in close association with other offcuts and objects which may have been brought together for recycling; though accompanying objects span a range of d…

Copper alloy and iron possible clasp fragment. Cast sub-rectangular tab, tightly rolled at one end round a corroded ferrous metal pin. This may be the folding flap from a late medieval folding clasp, or possibly part of a chape from a post-medieval buckle. There is buff staining on the back. Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy disc fragment. A semi-circular object taken to be half of a coin, but of copper alloy with a spot of white metal plating on either side. The ‘flan’ is improbably thin for a Roman coin, but the coating of copper alloy with silver would also be unusual for the medieval period to which this might alternatively belong.
