Copper alloy awl/point that is a long thin rod that has a square cross-section. The rod has an expanded waist which taped at both end to a point, however unfortunately one end is now truncated. The remaining side tapers to a fine point while the other side would most likely have had a flat terminal and acted like a tang the could have been inserted into a socket.

County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large amorphous-shaped piece of copper alloy, possible casting waste. The waste does not contain any evidence of slag or mineral ore within it's surface contours and is not from a refining process. It has solidified unfettered from the molten state and may possibly be associated with casting or industrial activity hereabouts. No metallurgical investigation has been carried out and the object remains un-dateable. A good deal of similar material has been found in the plough-zone of the fields in the vicinity of this find and further information and context is discussed in the notes secti…

A curled fin extends from the head towards the tail and the possible remains of a second fin can be seen on the opposite side of the head. Some detail on the face and body of the fish remains though it is very worn. The style of the object is very similar to Roman depictions of dolphin. A closely spaced series of transverse incised lines confers a vermiform segmented appearance upon the rest of the strip, which is curled and broken at its other end, where rust staining may hint at the former presence of an iron fixing pin [lost]. The form is apt to the decoration of a casket, though the extant ?fixing hole is larger than would be expected for a medieval mount. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1300.
