Copper alloy bell. Cast open mouthed bell with the stubs of an integrally cast apical suspension loop and with an irregular surface probably marking the position of a suspended clapper within; rust staining suggests this to have been of iron. There are three circumferential ribs about the lightly splayed mouth of the bell, whose form imitates that of contemporary church bells. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast curved plate with U-shaped ends, one broader than the other, and with a long U-shaped lug projecting from its concave side. The lug has a filled drilled hole of diameter c.2mm, suggesting the object pivoted when in use. A further element has been lost from the smaller end of the convex side; from what remains, this appears to have had a curved profile as well, though its projection would diverge from the main part of the object as it now survives. The finder kindly suggests this may be a fitting from a lidded tankard, though that class of object w…

Object type: PURSE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar of the early Post Medieval period, dating from circa AD 1450 - AD 1550. The purse bar comprises a central heart-shaped block with a vertical circular aperture through which is the remains of the suspension loop bar. At either side of the heart-shaped box are integrally cast, short, circular cross-sectioned, funnel shaped arms which then constricts into a circular-sectioned bar with expanded rounded terminal. Two loops of copper alloy wire have each been wrapped around the arms, and these would have formed part of the frame for the purse bag.
