A bawdy object or figurine, possibly a pipe tamper dating from the 18th or 19th century. One side of the figure displays male genitalia, the other female genitalia. Erotic objects are fairly frequent 18th and 19th century objects and include tokens and pipe tampers as well as these single sided plaques or figurines. It is possible that they all had a function for cleaning out pipes, but being made of lead, it is perhaps more likely that they were lucky charms or amulets.

Very worn button or ornamental fitting. It is circular and made from cast cu-alloy, displaying the setting for a semi-precious stone or glass centre-piece in the centre of the circle. Between and centre piece are moulded circles and dots, framing the green glass stone in the middle. Both the setting and the stone are chipped and very worn, probably not vouching for an old age but rather cheap-ish make. It is not clear if there was an attachment loop on the reverse; there is a moulded dot in the centre of the reverse, or possibly solder residue which could have attached a loop, wire or…

Broad period: MODERN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete heraldic mount provisionally dated to the early modern period 1650-1850. The mount is formed in two parts: the back plate is a very poor cast copper alloy amalgam which contains a considerable amount of lead alloy (evident in the grey corrosion product and typified by flakey laminated corrosion). The front plate is formed from a heavily incised and relatively thick silver sheet. The sheet has been fixed to the back plate by a combination of crimping and probably solder. The overall design on the front face is that of a gated tower or turret, the base of which sits on a twist…

A collection of Victorian jewellery, deposited as a 'hoard'. The deposit includes ear rings, necklaces, fragments from 'charm bracelets', and similar items. The metal is now very degraded and unidentifiable, but some of the bracelets bear copper alloy pendants and decorative stones (pebbles, rather than gemstones). The interest of this find lies in its mode of deposition; the entire collection was deposited in the ground, tangled together amongst metal wire. The reasons for such deposition remain unclear, but the action must have been deliberate, and an assoication with witchcraft…
