Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MODERN
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy thimble dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1650-1750). It is conical in shape with a domed top and a series of small circular indentations about the outside.  This is similar in style to some of the Dutch thimbles from this period. From about 1650, Dutch thimbles were made in one piece, and this technology was brought to England when John Lofting, a Dutch immigrant, was granted an English patent for a thimble-making machine in 1693. See: https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/textile-equipment/#16th-_and_early_17th-century_thimbles.

A complete modern copper alloy solid discoidal trade weight, probably an apothecary weight, dating from the latter part of the 19th century. It is circular in plan with downward sloping sides and a raised bevelled rim. The upper face is stamped '8 DRAMS' with a verification mark of a crown with V R below at 10 o' clock. It measures 46.9mm wide by 12.6mm high and is 1.1mm thick. The outer face has E. BLOCKLEY HEATHER punched into it in two lines. The lettering looks as though each letter was stamped individually, so this may be an owner's nameplate rather than a commercially produced label.
