Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A shard from a thin-walled conical object with closely-spaced machined screw threading on its outer convex surface. The upper and lower edges of the fragment are as made, suggesting an originally annular concavo-convex conical form of basal diameter 60mm. Probably too light to be from a shell casing. Copper alloy gas supply tap handle. Cast oval plate, dished on both sides to afford grip, with a knop on top and a waisted cylindrical collar below, the latter formerly continuing as a narrower square-section pin. Traces of degraded or burnt white metal plating appear on the handle. This might appear on fireside fittings such as a gas poker. Copper alloy shrapnel fragment. Cast shard from the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell, with grooves on either side running in opposite directions to maximise fragmentation at the detonation of the shell; jaggedly broken. This is evidence of the active defence of the Humber during the Second World War by numerous heavy batteries sited around the estuary. Copper alloy and iron gas supply tap. A cast oval copper alloy handle with deeply indented sides, an apical knop and a basal collar, mounted on a ferrous metal spindle. The tap regulated domestic gas supply: the local manufacture of coal gas was surprisingly widespread from the later 19th century into the 20th as the railways brought coal from pithead to processing works in small towns. Copper alloy anti-aircraft shrapnel fragment. A sub-rectangular fragment of a cast casing, with wide shallow grooves oriented in opposite directions on its two sides, and with its edges torn by explosive force. This is from the casing of a heavy anti-aircraft shell. The grooved surfaces were intended to maximise the fragmentation of the shell, which would usually explode at a predetermined altitude, hopefully near enemy aircraft. This shard was probably deposited during the defence of Grimsby and the Humber against German attack during the Second World War. Suggested date: Modern, 193…

Copper alloy shell fragment. A splinter from a heavy anti-aircraft shell, with straight grooves running in opposite directions on its two sides, and with opposed edges torn raggedly with explosive force. The grooved surfaces were intended to maximise the fragmentation of the shell as it burst at a pre-set altitude, thereby improving the chances of disabling its target. From the extensive air defence of the strategic Humber Estuary through the Second World War. Suggested date: Modern, 1939-1945 Length: 37.0mm, Width: 32mm, Thickness: 3.2mm, Weight: 15.65gms

Copper alloy ammunition fragment. A cylindrical cartridge case for a 20mm cannon shell, with a basal indentation and stamped characters S L 43 on the base, possibly denoting manufacture in 1943; crimped towards the top to retain the projectile part of the round. A basal dot and incuse ring may indicate the shell has been fired. This might have come from the armament of a fighter plane, or from a light anti-aircraft gun on the ground, presumably from the Second World War. Copper alloy nail fragment. A pressed metal decorative nail head in the form of the Cross of Jerusalem with a floret on a central boss. Iron staining appears on the back in a sunken area corresponding with the frontal boss. Later 19th-century advertisements identify these objects as nail heads, though a perennial fascination with the Knights Templar has ensured they are frequently taken as medieval by their hopeful finders. Copper alloy button. Copper alloy grenade filler plug. Cast discoid object, flat on one side with a flat basal indentation within a border, and with a rounded ridge occupying most of the other side. These components are commonly the only part of a hand grenade to survive its detonation in recognisable form. This must suggest wartime practice in the use of grenades, perhaps by a local Home Guard unit, or by troops tasked with harbour or coastal defence. Suggested date: Modern, 1939-1945. Copper alloy possible shell fragment. Cast concavo-convex disc with a screw-threaded edge and with two small [diameter 2.7mm] holes in opposite sides, and a third, larger hole occupied by a screw whose shank is broken flush with the underside of the object. A central hole is slightly distorted, as is the profile of the object. The finder kindly suggests this may come from the nose cone of an explosive shell. Copper alloy possible ammunition fragment. A fragment of a solid cast lightly concavo-convex object of estimated diameter 40mm with a central aperture, possibly of diameter 16.1mm, and with a circumferential groove on its convex face. The object has been fractured and distorted, probably with explosive force. This condition may suggest this to be a fragment from the nose or fuse of a light shell, possibly from an anti-aircraft gun, though the find spot could allow it to have been fired from either land or sea. Copper alloy grenade fragment. Cast discoid filler cap from a hand grenade, with a border standing proud on its outer side, and with a rounded and possibly sheared convex surface on the other. Although its iron casing was designed to fragment, the filler cap usually remained in one piece when the grenade exploded. This was presumably deposited in the course of military training, an activity from which this is almost a 20th-century type fossil. Suggested date: Modern, 1939-1945. Copper alloy anti-aircraft shell splinter. A fragment of cast copper alloy with regularly spaced grooves on either side, but running in opposite directions; broken on all sides with explosive force. This may be from the driving band of a heavy anti-aircraft shell, as kindly observed by Dr Kevin Leahy when examining a similar object. Numerous heavy gun batteries defended Hull and the Humber region during the Second World War. Suggested date: Modern, 1939-1945. Length: 49.9mm, Width: 37.4mm, Thickness: 3.0mm, Weight: 30.33gms
