56 pieces of burnt clay of total weight 800 grams, possibly from an oven of uncertain date. The clay is amorphous with only a few voids from organic inclusions or imprints as one sees on daub. There is no evidence of layering as one might expect in a kiln, furnace or cob. Occasional small rounded iron stone inclusions and very small chalk or limestone inclusions almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. The pieces are all amorphous and friable with angluar fractures on all faces. Only two have small areas of surface, smoothed but poorly finished with c…

Seven pieces of fired clay of irregular shape, probably broken. They are probably material from a kiln or hearth; the lining or base. The pieces have different colour and textures. Four are grey with areas of dark orange, one is a yellow brown colour, one is red and orange and swirled, and the last is yellow with some vitrification and crazed cracking on a flat face. They are all hard and show evidence of high heat. Compare to SWYOR-8C7620, SWYOR-586715, SWYOR-63CA13 and SWYOR-A52B85. They were found in the same area as many pieces of crushed querne stone, possibly used …

Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Shell Four fragments of oyster shell, one from the lower half and three from the upper half of these bivalves. Oysters were a common foodstuff from the Roman period, when British oysters were highly regarded, until the late Post-Medieval period - their recent status as a luxury food arises from nostalgic dinners held by nouveau riche London costermongers who served this (then) food of the poor to recall their impoverished origins. Suggested date: Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Weight: 12.15gms.

A small and incomplete shell, preserving part of one valve probably from an oyster(?) shell. A seemingly deliberate oval piercing is present towards the hinge end, and this may indicate deliberate modification of or damage to the shell in antiquity. Similar examples are recorded through the PAS database (e.g. NARC-3E2BB7, NARC-3DB1A6, LEIC-4C74A4) and might indicate modification as a pendant or similar item. Precisely when this would have occurred, and if this was indeed an intended function, remains uncertain. It measures 41.89mm in surviving length, 37.88mm in width, 4.53mm in thick…
