56 pieces of burnt clay of total weight 800 grams, possibly from an oven of uncertain date. The clay is amorphous with only a few voids from organic inclusions or imprints as one sees on daub. There is no evidence of layering as one might expect in a kiln, furnace or cob. Occasional small rounded iron stone inclusions and very small chalk or limestone inclusions almost certainly reflect natural inclusons in the clay rather than temper. The pieces are all amorphous and friable with angluar fractures on all faces. Only two have small areas of surface, smoothed but poorly finished with c…

Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Oyster shell. A fragment of oyster shell from the upper half of the shell of an edible bivalve. Although historically associated with Romanised occupation, oysters were equally a foodstuff throughout the post-Roman period and until recent [later 19th-century] times, when they acquired the cachet of a luxury. Given the scarcity of Roman material reported along with this object, a Roman date is probably unlikely. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Weight: 13.83gms.

One fragment of burnt clay which is probably a piece of daub. Orangey-pink external layer with buff areas. Sand inclusions, c.5% of total and occasional soft orange inclusions, fired daub or plaster. A Post-Medieval contemporary lightweight cast of a silver halfcrown, issued for Charles II (AD1660-85). Reverse: CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO around square shield, quartered by a long cross moline. Imitating North Vol. 2, No. 2761. Weight: 11.90g. Diameter: 34.20mm. A forgery like this would have been cast in a two-part mould (official coins were, until AD1662, struck by hand rather than cast). The forgers have filed the edge of this coin to remove all traces of the seam left by the join between the two halves of the mould. This forgery appears to be made of a lightweight metal with …
