Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy metalworking debris. Two small [lengths 67.6mm and 22mm] fragments of off-white and relatively lightweight skim from the early stages of metalworking. The larger fragment bears two longitudinal grooves of width 10.5mm which may show where the spillage has congealed over a pair of long objects. The smaller fragment appears to have solidified in the corner of a straight-sided trough. Similar to associated NLM-87C967 except these fragments have preserved the partial forms of objects which they came into contact with as they solidified. Associated with a group of other copper …

These fragments are lighter in weight than similarly-sized fragments of metal waste reported along with them, and a few appear vesicular. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1750.

Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Grey oyster shell fragment. A small chip from the bottom half of a bivalve oyster. Oysters were introduced to the British diet by the Romans and remained a popular food, especially for the poor or abstinent, until post-medieval times. The cachet of oysters as a luxury food is of relatively recent origin. If not archaeological, this fragment may be an ancient fossil fragment of Geological date – a possible inference from its grey tint and hardness. Metalworking debris. A dark brown glossy polished fragment – tested with magnet and found not to be ferrous metal, though the finder deems the mass and density to resemble that of steel. Nor is it pyrites, with which the finder is also well-acquainted after a lifetime of employment in extractive industries. Dr Kevin Leahy, with his background in the field of industrial metallurgy has kindly viewed the object and comments as follows: ‘I have had a look at the black lump on which you also wanted an opinion. To me this looks like a piece of ‘Spiegeleisen’ ferro-man…

Oyster shell. Two large oyster shells: the larger a flat bottom half and the smaller a concavo-convex top half from different edible bivalves of the same species. The oyster shell sizes are larger than those encountered in medieval or post-medieval deposits, and the larger part of the accompanying pottery must suggest a Roman date, and probably the primary deposition of food waste. British oysters were an esteemed foodstuff in Roman times. Iron Age dietary preferences seem not to have included marine-derived foods; this was perhaps because of taboo rather than the difficulty of procur…
