Grey oyster shell fragment. A small chip from the bottom half of a bivalve oyster. Oysters were introduced to the British diet by the Romans and remained a popular food, especially for the poor or abstinent, until post-medieval times. The cachet of oysters as a luxury food is of relatively recent origin. If not archaeological, this fragment may be an ancient fossil fragment of Geological date – a possible inference from its grey tint and hardness. Suggested date: Unknown, possibly Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 28.7mm, Weight: 3.06gms

An assemblege of eight pieces of slag. Seven of these pieces are undiagnostic slag (metal working waste). See Historic England: Archaeometallurgy, Guidelines for Best Practice 2015, p.23. Pieces A, F & G (see image) have a strong magnetic reaction and will jump off of a table top to attach to a strong magnet held near-by. Pieces C & E have a weaker magnetic reaction, moving slightly if a strong magnet is held near-by but not moving to attach themselves to the magnet. All of the above have a mid to dark grey colour, dull and roughened texture. Pieces B & D (see image) …

A piece of shell, possible oyster shell of unknown date.  Objects dating from the Late Iron Age to Modern period were deposited with this find from the same field therefore the other associated finds do not help narrow down the date. The shell is evidence of food waste and diet. Shell is difficult to date, therefore a broad date range is offered from the Roman period to modern, circa AD 43 to 1900. The shell measures 43.4 mm in length, 36 mm in width, 9 mm in thickness and weighs 12.7 grams.

A piece of possible slag or other industrial by-product such as dross, clinker, fuel ash, of unknown date, possibly Bronze Age to Modern, 2200 BC - AD 1900. It is a shiny light grey material, light in weight for its size, very soft (can be scratched with a finger nail), and it has a soapy feel. One face is irregular with many rounded particles, some of which are magnetic, and small holes. The other faces are smooth and fine grained, with conchoidal fractures. The piece is 41.3mm long, 33.3mm wide and 16.2mm thick. 14.5g.

A probable rock crystal artefact which has multiple conchoidal fractures. It is formed on a flake of perfectly clear rock crystal, is roughly circular and has bifacial, invasive, scaled working. Some edges have low angle retouch while others are vertical. It is 15.4mm long, 16.1mm wide and 7.3mm thick. 1.5g. The rock crystal is hard enough to scratch glass. Rock crystal was used rarely throughout prehistory; this example comes from a multi-period site of mainly Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000 BC - 1000 BC). The finder reports that evidence of platform crystal glass has p…

A fragment of an unidentified object of modern date. The metal is very light and appears cast and may be aluminium. The object has a cylindrical neck with bulbous terminal while another bulbous element is retained to one side of the neck. It is reminiscent of crossbow brooches, several of which have been found at this site. It may be a miscast brooch, however the metal is very light and this observation is made only on form.

The left valve of an oyster shell with a central perforation. Description: The perforation has been made from the inside of the shell to the outside and is 14mm x 15mm with three staight sides and one outwardly-curved side. The perforation has been made carefully with minimal damage to the shell and, along with the precise shape, suggests it was made deliberately rather than through accidental damage. Measurements: 79.52mm in length, 75.06mm in width and 46.07g in weight. Discussion: Perforated oyster shells are found in many archaeologicaly-secure contexts dating from the Ro…
