Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of shell, possible oyster shell of unknown date. Objects dating from the Late Iron Age to Modern period were deposited with this find from the same field therefore the other associated finds do not help narrow down the date. The shell is evidence of food waste and diet. Shell is difficult to date, therefore a broad date range is offered from the Roman period to modern, circa AD 43 to 1900. The shell measures 43.4 mm in length, 36 mm in width, 9 mm in thickness and weighs 12.7 grams.

Oyster shell. Two large oyster shells: the larger a flat bottom half and the smaller a concavo-convex top half from different edible bivalves of the same species. The oyster shell sizes are larger than those encountered in medieval or post-medieval deposits, and the larger part of the accompanying pottery must suggest a Roman date, and probably the primary deposition of food waste. British oysters were an esteemed foodstuff in Roman times. Iron Age dietary preferences seem not to have included marine-derived foods; this was perhaps because of taboo rather than the difficulty of procur…
