A fragment of a later medieval glazed clay tile. The tile was probably (right-angled) triangular in form originally, judging by the angle of a glazed side and a second side which features traces of lime mortar. The very fact that one of the sides, as well as the upper face, is coated in lead slip suggests that this was not a floor tile. Whether it acted as a architectural fragment or a step riser is impossible to assert. The clay is reddish brown with a number of (possibly grog) inclusions. The glaze is a light green colour and, as stated, is applied to two perpendicular faces.

A fragment of a stencilled, slip-painted medieval tile. Approximately one quarter of the tile survives but unfortunately it is very difficult to see what type of design is depicted on the surface of the tile. It is likely to represent some sort of floral design, perhaps a fleur-de-lis. The application of white clay through a stencil was a very unusual technique for decorating tiles. The broken section of the tile clearly shows that the white clay was applied to the surface of the tile with considerable pressure. In some areas the white clay is between 2-4mm in thickness on a worn til…
