An incomplete probably Post Medieval tin anthropomorphic applique mount in the form of a facing mask, dating to c. AD 1500-1600. It is similar to an ancient Greek Comedy mask, sub-rectangular with a slightly wider upper part, the jaw and chin narrower. It is hollow, with features moulded in sharp relief on the outer face.  A small area which projects a little upwards from, and across, the brow of the face may be intended to represent hair. Some of this seems to be missing to an old break. Below this, on the brow, is a 'widow's peak' w…

A complete Post Medieval cast pewter or tin alloy screw cap, c.AD 1700-1800. This object is the cap of a small bottle, which would have screwed into place. It is shaped like a crown with a central point that may have ended in a cross, but has since broken below the tip. The small and precise decoration was made as part of the casting mould, which suggests a later Post-Medieval date. This cap is the right sizeand shape for a perfume or snuff bottle, popular during this period.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast pewter unidentified object, possibly a fitting of some kind, Post Medieval in date. This item is made of a long, twisted shaft that ends in a knopped terminal at the base. The other end is shaped into a flattened, circular plate with an apeture, possibly where a rivet or pin would sit., that had broken across the middle. It is unclear what form the original object would have been. The fineness of this object suggests a late Post Medieval date, and the lack of hallmarks indicates this is not made of silver or silver plated.

Description: A pressed tin coffin plaque that would have depicted a pair of cherubs and would have been ovoid. The artefact is fragmented into eight larger pieces and numerous smaller flakes although there are no other signs of corrosion. Dimensions: The largest fragment is approximately 70mm x 30mm. Owing to its fragmentary state, it is not possible to tell the original dimensions of the complete object.  Based on the fragments remaining, the object would probably not have been larger that 100mm wide and 70mm high. Discussion: Tin plaques such as these were common throughout t…
