Two silver shillings of Edward VI, base silver profile issue, found very close together and undoubtedly part of a hoard or purse loss. Edward VI shillings are rare as stray finds and the presence of two in such a small area makes it almost certain that these two coins went into the ground together. They exhibit some wear but they are also weakly struck and, given that Edward's debased coinage was not in circulation for very many years, unlikely to have been lost or deposited much after c.1560. Catalogue 1) Edward VI, Canterbury, North 1921, initial mark t/T, 1549, 4.69g 2) Ed…

The coins consist of 11 South Western British uninscribed silver staters commonly associated with the Durotriges, a people thought to have inhabited an area covering the modern county of Dorset, parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the late Iron Age. The silver coins appear to be all of the type ABC 2169 / VA 1235-1 / BMC 2555ff produced from about 60/50 BC to the late first century BC. However in most cases the coin design is too indistinct to be certain that they do not belong to varieties of this type. The coins are fairly worn in appearance an…

Four base silver radiates fused together in a pile. Given this feature they clearly entered the ground in a similar position and, since they are of base silver, they furnish a case of Treasure. The only legible portions are provided by the face visible at each end of the pile, an obverse of Postumus from his Principal Mint and another of Gallienus from the Gallic Mint operating in the late 250s (with a GALLIENVS.P.F.AVG legend, radiate and cuirassed bust right). Both coins are in sharp condition with little wear and the loss or deposition most probably occurred in the 260s. Three m…

Three base silver radiates and the remains of a fourth fused together. Little is legible but one of the coins can be identified as of Philip I (AD244-9). The hoard - or purse loss - probably went into the ground in the 250s or early 260s. The fact that there are two or more silver coins lost or deposited together means that this assemblage qualifies as Treasure under the 1997 Treasure Act.

Description of Find: The coins range in date from AD 251-279. With the exception of the very rare coin of Domitian II (the second recorded example), the group is broadly similar in composition to the many Romano-British coin hoards (at least 200 so far recorded) buried in the aftermath of the breakaway Gallic Empire. The Gallic empire, whose capital was at the city of Trier but which had held dominion over Britain, was established in AD 260 and reconquered by the legitimate ('central') emperor Aurelian in AD 274. Summary by reign: Central Empire Trebonianus Gallus (AD 251-3) 1 V…
