Martin Henig per comm writes "This is a lovely gem, a red jasper which I would date from its style to around the very end of the 2nd century AD. It is a full, nude bust of a youth with his hair bound with a fillet and long locks down the name of his neck. These locks suggests it is to be interpr…

A Roman oval cornelian intaglio, probably dating 1st to the 2nd century AD. This intaglio is Henig Series A. The colour of the gemstone is an even orange. The intaglio is oval in plan and conforms to Henig's Flat Shape I, the upper (engraved) surface is longer than the lower (smooth) surface, so the sides are angled outwards. The upper side is carved with a standing female figure, Fortuna, facing right with has one arm held out in front holding the rudder, and in her other hand is a corn…

A Roman nicolo intaglio dating to the 1st-2nd century AD. The stone has been cut so that it has an oval outer face with steep sloping sides. The base is also oval shaped but convex. The stone is onyx. Onyx stones with white outer surfaces were carved to create the banded navy/black to light blue seen in this example. The convex shape is consistent with earlier examples of intaglio, with the later markets being dominated by flat cut stones (Zienkiewicz, 1987, 13).
The intaglio is decorated with a carved figure standing right, both arms raised and possibly holding accompanying objec…

Dark blue opaque glass Intaglio. Oval gem stone with bevelled upper edge, flat behind. A naturalistically carved motif presents a male nude figure standing right, probably helmetted - or alternatively with a pudding basin haircut - standing left, holding an object in his outstretched right hand: this is probably a severed head; and a staff in his left. A long shaggy cloak hangs over his shoulders reaching down to his calves. An object at first identified as an oval chip is at 5 O'clock; closer inspection suggests this may be a round shield with rim. The lower sides and back are extrem…

Roman carnelian intaglio depicting the goddess Minerva facing left. Probably from a ring. The sides are bevelled, the two main surfaces are convex and the reverse is plain.
It is almost certainly second-century AD in date on the ground of its composition and the style of engraving (from what I can make out). It's fairly similar to a very finely cut carnelian from the military supply base at Holt, Denbeighshire (Henig 'A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gems from British Sites') No. 242, and a carnelian in an iron ring from the fortress at Caerleon No. 234, a carnelian from the lead worki…

Description : Roman oval engraved gem, set within a modern silver setting. Setting is decorated with a scrolling leaf motif.
Discussion: There are no parallels for the setting within the British Museum collections.
Description of gem: The translucent pale brown intaglio, its surface crazed, is flat front and back, with a strong bevel on the front face and probably a narrower bevel on the back face (view partly obscured by the silver setting). The engraved image is of a nude helmeted male figure st…

An oval cornelian intaglio of Roman date. Intaglio's of this size and shape were set into finger rings.
On one side is etched a dolphin with a star below. This side is slightly more domed and was the side initially designed to be seen. The opposite side has sustained some post-depositional damage, although an altar with three rays eminating from the domed top can be clearly seen. This side is flatter than the other, suggesting that this is the side which was intended to be set into the ring frame.
Intaglios with a design on both sides are uncommon and suggest that the gem has been…

Amethyst
Intaglio. Flat oval gemstone, cut with the slightly left-facing (as viewed) bust and shoulders of a man with sideburns and beard but no moustache, wearing a jacket with prominently high lapels. The reversed legend BRIGHT appears below the bust. Presumably from a seal or seal ring. The back of stone bears diagonal marks from sawing. The edges of stone are bevelled.
The image resembles that of John Bright (1811-1889), a Quaker, Radical, and Liberal statesman, associated with Richard Cobden in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League. He was a noted orator and …

An intaglio set within an oval-shaped copper alloy outer casing. It is probably Roman in date, but could also be Post medieval. The intaglio is possibly of red jasper and is engraved with a male bust facing left (described from the matrix). There has been some deterioration of the material and it is not possible to accurately determine who is represented. The material is opaque and dark red, with crazed cracks and is slightly shiny. The copper alloy casing has a bevelled rim which lies level with the intaglio, and the lower surface is slightly hollowed. There are traces of probable so…

A cut garnet oval intaglio, of Hellenistic origin. The incised design depicts a female figure, leaning on a column with her left elbow. The subject is Aphrodite, who seems to be either robing or disrobing herself. The intaglio is 13.5mm long and 7.7mm wide, and is flat and undecorated on the reverse. The style, subject and shape show it is Hellenistic and probably dates from the 3rd or 2nd century BC.
This object was originally erroneously recorded as Roman and depicting Securitas. Database user Ittai Gradel kindly submitted an error report pointing out the mistake, and also provid…
