A large gold pendant with a cabochon gemstone setting. The pendant comprises a gold sheet back-plate to which has been soldered a tri-partite frame, the two outermost elements consisting of strands of twisted beaded gold wire and the innermost an upright gold strip, which clasps the gemstone setting. At the top is a suspension loop, made from a strip of gold sheet that has been soldered onto the back-plate and rolled forward to meet the top of the frame. Dark blue opaque glass Intaglio. Oval gem stone with bevelled upper edge, flat behind. A naturalistically carved motif presents a male nude figure standing right, probably helmetted - or alternatively with a pudding basin haircut - standing left, holding an object in his outstretched right hand: this is probably a severed head; and a staff in his left. A long shaggy cloak hangs over his shoulders reaching down to his calves. An object at first identified as an oval chip is at 5 O'clock; closer inspection suggests this may be a round shield with rim. The lower sides and back are extrem…

Stone or glass, gold and copper alloy seal matrix. A sub-rectangular purple coloured stone backed by a possibly organic material which is coloured green by copper corrosion, and retained within a setting of red tinted gold from which six tiny lugs project to grip the stone; these lugs occur on two adjacent sides only. The setting is corrugated with three gutters which run all around it. It bears a perforation of diameter 2mm centrally on one of its shorter sides, where its side is divided. A knob of green corrosion occurs on the opposite short side, though the metal setting is here un…

Amethyst Intaglio. Flat oval gemstone, cut with the slightly left-facing (as viewed) bust and shoulders of a man with sideburns and beard but no moustache, wearing a jacket with prominently high lapels. The reversed legend BRIGHT appears below the bust. Presumably from a seal or seal ring. The back of stone bears diagonal marks from sawing. The edges of stone are bevelled. The image resembles that of John Bright (1811-1889), a Quaker, Radical, and Liberal statesman, associated with Richard Cobden in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League. He was a noted orator and …
