Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

An incomplete early medieval gold setting containing a domed red cabochon gem, probably a garnet (c.AD580-650). The setting comprises a back-plate made of non-precious metal. This plate exends slightly from the top of the edge of the mount. This plate has been covered with a thin sheet of gold which wraps around the edges and is turned to form a shallow gold collar forming the setting for the cabochon. At the edges of the mount is a beaded border above which is a band of plain gold for the gem setting. The gem is cracked into two pieces extending from the 1 and 7 o'clock positions.

A collection of 88 glass, ceramic, and amber beads from an Anglo-Saxon grave. The beads vary in size and shape, but were probably from one or two necklaces associated with a grave. 4 beads are glass. The largest of these is incomplete, but was probably spherical in its original shape. The glass is clear with a smear of blue internally. D=16.63. A tubular bead of dark blue opaque glass. L=18.46; D=3.63; W=0.3g. 2 small spherical beads of clear glass that may have silver or gold foil internally. Note that these may actually be two bulbs from one bead, as these occur in the Roman period …
