White metal ingot. A cast oval fragment of dense bright white metal which has been tightly rolled, hammered to round-ended cylindrical form and subsequently indented. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. The mass of the object does not coincide closely with that of a series of weights – derived from the Scandi…

Object type: CASE (PIPE)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Even though this is a more modern find, it is a highly decorated pewter, or possibly silver-plated cigarette case, with a floral motif. Each outer face of the case is decorated with foliage, but on the back face, there are two centrally-located flowers, whereas on the front face, there are centrally-located engraved initials inside a shield.
Likely produced in the late 1800s, it is engraved with the words 'AC Xmas 1918', and was clearly destined as a post-WW1 Christmas present to somebody. Even though it has been rather crushed while in situ, the hinges are still at…

A token or gaming counter. A small circular metal disc decorated on one side with swirling lines, dots and small circles (possibly foliage) around a central flower-type motif. It has also been pierced for suspension on a string or chain and this has caused another tear. Mostly brown in colour, the decoration is silvery whe…

White metal unidentified object fragments. Fifty-three scraps of a solidified melted alloy rendered amorphous by intense heat, possibly aluminium. Accompanied by hollow struts of similar material. Though the material is similar to that encountered on aircraft crash sites, its restricted distribution might rather suggest machinery involved in a bonfire in this case. A slightly incomplete probable knife handle, composed of a white metal core, and plated in iron.
The handle is rectangular in shape, and oval in profile. It splays at the butt end, to make gripping easier, and becomes rectangular in profile.
It is likely to be post-Medieval in date, due to having been found amongst other objects post-Medieval in date. However, other than its depositional context, there are few distinguishing features which could firmly place it to a more specific time-frame.
It is possibly connected to the nearby Stannon Quarry.

White metal unidentified object fragment. A small concavo-convex billet of white metal with a curving surface which appears beaten on its convex surface and appearing gouged or distorted on its concave underside. Though the outer surface appears similar to the end of an early medieval ingot, the underside appears to indicate catastrophic damage arising from mechanical action or failure, and at all events is not what would be expected of the manual subdivision of a small ingot. Nor does the current mass relate to systems of measurement thought to have been observed in early medieval tim…

A metal unidentified object of modern date, with magnetic properties, perhaps made of steel, nickel or cobalt, perhaps in an alloy with other metals. It is a circular disc with rounded edges and a circular hole in the centre of one face. Each circular face is slightly concave, and the surface is damaged with deep dents and pieces missing, and is also faceted, perhaps from the impact of percussive blows. A significant crack, intersecting with the central hole, is also visible running most of the way across the face without the hole, and from the hole to the edge on the other face.
