White metal medallion. A shield-shaped medallion with a suspension loop at the top. One side bears the image of a motor car and the legend: PRESENTED WITH/THE WIZARD/ 15.9 BENTLEY. The other side shows an elephant, with the caption: MYSTIC SIGNS / No. 1. This was a free gift with the Wizard comic published by D C Thompson 1922-1963, and relaunched 1970-1978. The subject matter and the use of a lightweight alloy might commend a date in the 1930s; a collector’s website suggests 1928-1930. White metal toy. Discoid round shield detached from a toy soldier modelled at a scale of 20mm or 1:72. The shield has been carefully painted by the owner with enamel paints, with a yellow field, two red chevrons and two groups of four pellets, with red areas highlighted in black ink, and with a central glossy orange boss. The back of the shield is tan, and has a central pit for attachment to the soldier. A shield of later Roman or early medieval date is probably intended, with a motif perhaps vaguely inspired by those of the Notitia Dignitatum. The scale and subject suggest this to ha…

A complete but squashed, cracked and bent white metal thimble of Post-Medieval date. It is assumed to be made of silver, however XRF analysis has not been carried out to date. The thimble has possibly been formed in one-piece, no obvious seams are visible. However, a subtle line between the top and sides of the thimble could equally be the resulting fine crack caused by the artefact having been squashed or a well formed seam. Holes are present over this subtle feature but this could have been an attempt to further disguise a join. The artefact weighs 2.43g. In its current co…

White metal thimble. A lightweight alloy machine-stamped domed or conical thimble, with a billeted foot ring, a broad basal zone occupied by a bordered frieze of comma-shaped curls and pendant arches against a horizontally lined ground. The borders are decorated with a presumably rouletted series of vertical bars below the frieze and with two rows of triangular stamps which face each other above it. The upper wall is occupied by machine stamped hexagonal-to-circular pits, which appear to have continued as a concentric arrangement of die-stamped pits on the top. Squashed. The lightweig…

White metal possible coin. A flat flan bearing faint trace of a bust right, otherwise featureless. Possibly clipped with the removal of legends; edges appear neatly cut. The overall impression is that this may not actually be a coin. It is possible this object may relate to a rash of forgeries reported from various sites detected by this club over the years, though those forgeries are usually of different style and construction, and are thought to come from a 'mint' in the Grimsby area. Obverse description: possibly bust right. All other detail lost. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman …

An incomplete white metal alloy artefact, of uncertain dating, but possibly Late Medieval in dating (AD 1400 to AD 1700). The artefact has a globular base which then extends upwards into a circular socket. Mineralised remains of plant material, probably wood are present in the socket. Multiple small V shaped knife cuts are present over the base but do not appear to form an organised pattern. XRF analysis of the surface has shown that the artefact is predominately made from Lead (Pb) and Tin (Sn) with traces of Iron (Fe), Antimony (Sb) and Copper (Cu). The artefact measures 34…

An incomplete white metal, possibly nickel, object of probable Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1800 - 1900. The object is sub-triangular with irregular sloping sides and a flat top and base. The top is narrower than the base. The base appears to have an incised design thought this cannot be sufficiently determined. The object is 10.3mm long, 9.3mm wide, 5.2mm thick and weighs 2.4g. It is possible that this fragment may be part of a block from a printing press thought this attribution cannot be certain due to the advance wear of the object.

White metal and ceramic mount. A shiny round white ceramic boss of plano-convex section retained in a metal frame with a scalloped edge. The stub of a central integral fixing pin of diameter 5.8mm projects from the back, and is surrounded by alternating smaller and larger round holes. The boss is now smashed. The finder kindly suggests a function as a harness decoration; this reporter would rather see it as a fitting from a domestic setting - the white ceramic might even suggest it to come from a washroom or kitchen.
