A 19th century oval gold locket. The locket is hinged into two valves and has retained its contents. On the front of the locket is an engraved horse's head above a coronet, signifying a family. Within one valve is a sheet of paper with a linen backing and part of a glass protective layer. The paper is presumably the remains of a photograph but nothing is now visible. The remainder of the contents are n olnger clear but include some apparent hair, the wing of an insect and other material not readily identifiable.

The backplate of a late post medieval gold locket. The remaining part of the locket is made from thin gold sheet. The outer face of the backplate has a stamped floral design with continuous leaf pattern around the edge which develop in five places as defined leaves towards the centre around an open lily type flower. There is a very small amount of copper alloy wire protruding from the rim which may have originally been part of the inside of a loop for hanging the locket or may just have provided a rigid inner framework for the edge of the backplate. On the inside the thin gold sheet i…

A post medieval to modern gold locket, possibly a mourning locket, dating to c. AD 1800-1900. The locket is oval shaped, and formed of two halves held together by a hinge on one side and clasp on the other. The hinge is broken, so when the locket is opened the two halves fall apart. A medieval gold locket in the form of a miniature padlock. The padlock appears to be made in two pieces, the outer casing, and the bar across the top which is attached to one of the side panels. A U-shaped slot in the opposite side panel was designed to take the key, which does not survive. Single suspension loops on either side of the padlock each hold a gold link: the padlock was probably originally used to fasten two ends of a chain. The base is decorated with cusping which terminates at each end with a fleur-de-lys, one of which has lost a petal; the other has become slightly deta…

Post Medieval gold locket, 21mm long, 14mm wide and 6mm thick. The locket is in fair condition with a pale yellow patina and weighs 2.10 grams. It is probably Victorian in date and has an oval form with a raised shield on one side, surrounded by foliate carving. It is interesting as it contains a lock of plaited black hair and was probably a mourning locket.
