TREASURE CASE 2017 T140 - DISCLAIMED Description: An incomplete silver gilt crucifix fragment dating to the medieval period. The remaining section consists of the lower half of the cross, which has a flared terminal with convex base. Upon this section can be seen the legs of the crucified Christ, extending from beneath the lion-cloth to the toes, with the knees bent and feet together in the standard depiction. Late medieval or early post medieval gold crucifix, 16th century. The foot of the cross is expanded in plan and decorated with a linear pattern of blue and black enamel. The top of the cross has a strip across it with the black enamel inscription INRI (for "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews") with a blue enamel line above & below. The christ figure has a crown of thorns, radiate crown and loincloth; the nails are visible going through the hands and the crossed feet; there are traces of white enamel on the body, which has fine incised lines all over, presumably to key-in the enamel. A medieval gold crucifix pendant. The cross and figure are cast in one piece with an integral loop. The cross is cylindrical rather than square-shaped and the ends are finished diagonally rather than flush. The figure of Christ hangs with his feet crossed over each other and his arms stretched upwards either side of his head. A cloth is draped from the waist to cover the upper legs.
