Detached circular gold and garnet setting. The object has a gold backplate to which is soldered three concentric beaded wires; the outer and inner are very finely beaded and the central wire has larger beads. This is a common arrangement for Anglo-Saxon filigree. Within the innermost beaded ring is a plain collar which rises up the sides and slightly over the top of a circular garnet. This is dirty, and although the flash of the flat top of the garnet can be seen, it is impossible to see if there is a foil beneath. The backplate is featureless apart from a central roughly circular rec…

Treasure Report: 2011 T254 'Tendring District', Essex: gold and gem setting Description: A medieval gem setting. Traces of the original fixing remain on the reverse. The setting is hexagonally shaped and the gem is dark blue, possibly a sapphire. The setting is gold and dates from the thirteenth century. Dimensions: length 11 mm, width 10 mm. Discussion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. A gold jewellery fitting of Post-Medieval date, 16th-17th century. Dora Thornton of the British Museum writes: 'The main body of the artefact is made of thin gold wire, each end recurving on itself to create a loop and the form is of a long bodied s-shape. Attached at one of these looped ends are a further two gold wire loops (so forming a chain link). A five pronged circular shape (akin to an opened umbrella) has been threaded through the main body to the other end and has been soldered on at the base of the loop. At the end of each prong is circular opening. This element has bee…

Treasure case: 2006 T413 gold circular fitting This broad flat band has no bevelling or shaping at the edges which one would normally expect in a finger ring, suggesting that it is more likely to be a fitting of some kind. In the absence of any other diagnostic features such as decoration or inscription, there is no evidence to date this object pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Medieval gold jewellery fitting from a composite piece of jewellery. A gold disc back-plate, the reverse flat with a central integral rivet surrounded by file marks, with a gold setting on the front formed from four cusped sides which rise to form a rectangular collet. The collet holds a rectangular purple stone with a flat or nearly flat upper face, almost certainly amethyst, now pushed back into the setting. The join between the sides of the collet and the back-plate can be seen as a faint line around the edge. The fitting is extremely similar although slightly smaller, to one at…

A gold fragment of an artefact of an undiagnostic date. It is in the form of a penannular wire loop which appears to have been hammered to shape and may have originally been circular but has been crushed and appears to have been deliberately cut at both ends. It seems likely that it is a jewellery fragment and could be a crushed ring fragment or off an ear ring. It is possibly Roman as it was found adjacent to an amount of silver denarii and Roman pottery. However it is undiagnostic and cannot be securely dated to any period therefore it does not classify as treasure. The length is 20…

A fragment of an item of jewellery of composite construction. It comprises an irregularly shaped pale gold collet containing a dark blue cabochon stone. Around the stone is a frame of pale gold sheet metal set into a hollow dished "bezel", itself filled with a dark substance (?niello), all surrounded by a beaded border. The rear of this has a bevelled edge and a central raised pellet. Projecting from two opposites sides of this element are thin, flat "arms", possibly the remnants of the frame of a brooch. This object originally formed the setting for a gemstone or glass inlay, and formed part of a larger composite object such as a disc brooch, pendant or other accessory. An increasing number of similar settings, with varying centres and wire collars, have been found as stray finds and recorded on the PAS database e.g. NMS-274C44, WMID-C02AF3, SF-CB7620, NARC-05D4C1, NARC-05D4C1, PAS-E9BEA3 and PAS-A78288. The central setting of the early 7th-century Canterbury pendant is c. 13-14mm in diameter, similar in size to the present example from 'Near Woodbridge' (Webster and Backhouse 1991, n…

Modern gold object, probably a jewellery fitting. The object is circular in plan and slightly domed. The upper surface is decorated with six dividing segments, alternating plan and with incised lines radiating from the centre. There is also three small pieces on the upper surface which appear to 'claw' the external edge of the body but do not extend to the reverse. On the reverse, there is a thin tubular attachment in the centre which has a hole running the length of the tube and piercing the front. There is a projection off of the circular body, measuring c.10.2mm in length, which is…

Enamelled roundel, with a gold backplate and a gold outer wall which is very perfectly and neatly soldered on, but at one point now torn and distorted. Extremely slender internal cell walls of gold pick out a human figure from the waist up, holding out the left arm and with a further curving wall perhaps depicting the right arm. Both cells of the figure, head/body/left arm and right arm, are filled with dark green enamel, and there is white opaque enamel outside. This roundel is about the right size to come from a finger-ring, and circular roundels of similar size are known from …

A complete post medieval gold fitting of possible 17th century dating. The object is possibly a jewellery fitting. The main body of the object is in the shape of an hourglass contained within a rectangular border. The hourglass and the uprights are roughly cylindrical in plan. The object is not decorated but the surface of the hourglass and uprights have been covered in tiny indentations giving the impression of a pitted surface. The uprights to the sides of the hourglass form along with the hourglass itself have raised collars at the midpoint; the collars on the uprights are bands of…

An incomplete circular gold and garnet setting. It comprises a circular gold sheet back-plate to which has been soldered a domed framework of cells, made from upright strips of gold sheet. The framework has a central circular cell, which connects to three outer semi-circular cells. Between two of these is a straight cell wall, two more of which are probably missing from between the other semi-circular cells. All are now empty. A filigree collar, made from two strands of worn beaded wire, masks the junction between the back-plate and the framework. The reverse is plain with a circular …

~~A gold composite jewellery fitting. The back plate is formed by an oval sheet with a twisted rope like border. Three circular sectioned wire loops are present on either side. These have been soldered to a collar made from a strip of gold, set at right angles, running around the inside of the rope border. This collar would have secured the original gem in place. The gem is now missing. This item shares similarities with items of Roman and Early Medieval period, for example: IOW-05E330 (2014 T586), PAS-D3A974 (2009 T103) and SWYOR-4637C5 (2010 T573).
