Circumstances of discovery
Five Iron Age coins were recovered by metal-detector users Mr. David Villanueva and Mrs. Carol Smith near Chartham, Kent between the 22nd September and 5th October 2008. The coins were reported to the coroner and Finds Liaison Officer in October, and brought to the British Museum in November 2008. A further three Iron Age coins were found and reported to the Finds Liaison Officer in December 2008 and brought to the British Museum in March 2009. A ninth coin was found on 26th February 20…

Probable Iron Age gold stater fragment; roughly one quarter of the coin survives and it has been bent almost double and apparently cut. On one side are eight raised rectangles set at angles to each other; on the other side the decoration is less clear as it is folded but there are raised pellets and a circle containing a pellet. Possibly an Iron Age coin reused as Viking hack gold. Length 9.55mm, width 6.75mm, thickness as folded 3.9mm, thickness of metal variable 1.0mm-2.6mm, weight 0.89g.

A gold half-stater of the continental Iron Age, 3rd-2nd century BC.
Someone from Chris Rudd has identified the coin as a Hesperange type of half-stater, class 1, around 2nd century BC and sometimes referred to as a hemistatere a la fleur, which are sometime attributed to the province of Namur in southeast Belgium. References: BN 10280, Scheers/GB fig 41, 42; Sills 161, 162; DT 31. It was probably struck from worn, rusty dies, but the obverse probably contained the head of Apollo facing right, and a biga on the reverse.
