An incomplete gold biconical bead of probable early medieval date. The bead comprises a single length of plain wire coiled into about 10 turns to form the body of the bead. The wire has a raised central rib creating a distinct stepped profile to the bead on the outside and is flattened on the inside. The lower end, which would have formed the centre of the bead, terminates in a rough break. The wire at the complete upper end is neatly tapered and smoothed down. An incomplete gold Spacer Bead of Early Medieval date (AD 600-700). Ascribed culture, Anglo-Saxon. Description: The object is composed of a sheet of gold, conical in its original form, but now compressed, giving a flattened, sub-rectangular shape. The object is decorated with applied filigree wire. The upper and lower edges have beaded wire collars, the lower edge would have attached to a second, similar, cone to form a complete bi-conical spacer bead. This is missing and there is a short fracture along the right upper and lower edges, due to the compression of the object. …

An incomplete biconical gold spacer bead from an early medieval necklace, made from beaded a single coiled length of beaded wire, the ends tapering to a small hole for threading. Several coils of the bead are broken at one end. Biconical gold wire beads of this form objects were used as spacer beads on high status necklaces during the second half of the seventh century.
